iphone question

Postby tone » Tue Jul 19, 2011 2:09 am

what would you guys recommend -

I have an iphone 3Gs thats unlocked here in the states. could probably sell it here before we land in japan for maybe 150 -

what are the economics of getting a new iphone in japan, and how is the experience?

could i just pop a sim card into this iphone like i do here and at least have phone and text functionality?

debating which route to take - though selling for $ might be the best option and then buy something in japan. are there any non iphones that are just the shiz these days that i might consider also? thanks, i know this is a piddly question

I don't have an iPhone or Android phone yet but I follow the recent changes in the previously mega-fuckqued SIM card situation in Japan (which now is improving) at softbanksucks...

Wouldn't even consider Softbank again. Go Android on Docomo, you won't regret it.

Bring your 3GS and get a "TalkingSIM Platinum" from b-mobile. It's cheaper than any other option and b-mobile uses the Docomo network. Best of everything -- don't have to buy a new phone, get to use Docomo, and don't have to sign a long-term contract. Full details on all of b-mobile's SIMs is available here. Make sure your screen is wide enough to see the full table, the last column should be "Notes".
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking

cool, this looks like good advice - thx man. looks like data also is available and no contract. may go more updated android just to have a fast newer phone. are most of those tied to contracts

I think that's something that users set up if they are getting too much spam, no? I have sent many messages from gmail to keitai addresses without trouble...

I don't have time to test it out, but according to this Gmail help page, you can send SMS from Gmail to phones (the instructions are in Japanese as well, don't know if that means it works in Japan though...). YMMV

I've sent from Google Voice before, but be careful 'cause it's considered an international SMS. I believe those are free to receive but it'll cost you 100yen per message to reply.........!!

The Default setting blocks basically all maill non Docomo, Softbank, Au mail addresses. Yes, users can set it up to not block these "PC" mail addresses (and many do) but about 50% of J people don't bother or don't know how it seems. I'm sure the problem will get phased out eventually but right now, it's still too much of an issue for me to jump from Docomo.

You sure about that? I use it all the time to SMS with my lil brother back in the states and I've never got a 100 yen Int'l SMS charge from it.
