There were many "waves" of mongoloids that came over. One of the more interesting ones apparently came from Japan, using the kelp forests as sort of a highway with food aplenty. There are even some cultures in South America that share (I think it was Jomon style) ancient pottery and many linguistic similarities with Japanese.
