Funny thing is when I talk to J-people about this, they all admit that the media here is controlled, the gov. lies and covers shit up, etc....but most don't seem to care about what's going on unless it's the hot topic to talk about.

Kind of like the animosity that right-wing extremists feel towards people in left-wing political parties.

Really spot on. And quite a bit scary now that you mention it. Had a couple of occurrences the last few days actually with yankis (summer brings them out I guess) and can totally see Japan's equivalent of the uneducated american south losing it.

I think attitudes toward multiculturalism in this cuntry can be summed up in a single word...tolerance. Of course, this is prefixed with "in."

Uff, really of anyone like that 'finding a reason'. Having a hafu kid you really start to notice these things.. Went camping this week (where apparently the tatooed have migrated after Kobe's Suma beach was barred hah) got stared down by a guy twice for no reason other than being gaijin and camping, laughed it off, but had some great opening lines if I weren't busy with smoking a pork shoulder. Then at the park today a couple of mullet kids (which is universal language for 'Hi! My mom is white trash no matter the color of her skin!') started talking around my kid (who speaks great Japanese) about gaijin this and that. Built up a bit I suppose. :ninja:

Yes. I follow politics and am not a fan of the tea-baggers. I basically was thinking of Birmingham as a parallel, don't be pedantic please. His comment scared the shit out of me as it is very real and in an incubation phase here and that is all I meant to say.

The media in Japan is controlled? No! Say it ain't so, thought Japan was supposed to be this FREE democracy.

Prime fucked example... Yanks. There is no "American" blood, just a damn passport, social security number, and Uncle Sam...

Although I'm mixed, my father's side is Navajo/Apache and I would say that is "American blood." Unfortunately, being brown for him has resulted in TSA searches (they think he's arab??) and because Athabaskan isn't English (you'd be surprised how many people will give the whole "This is America, speak English!" rant to him) he stopped speaking it before I was born. It's all pretty fucked but I would say that one's cultural identity far trumps ones ethnic background, even if you don't look like what people expect.

Greji wrote:I have seem the same type of reactions to these kind of incidents. Strangely (it could be a cultural upbringing trait), they immediately start piping the same wakanakatta, Nihonji mitai, Nihonji to omotta, etc. Thus saying that looking and acting Japanese is the upper tier as compared to being a Zainichi....

LOL, exactly...their superiority programming doesn't recognize the condescending function unless it's called upon by a Japanese user.

That's really is fucked.
Just another form of "ethnic cleansing" if you ask me.

What "bottles" my mind more is this type of behavior outside Japan when I'm in the states. The ones that still refer to every NJ as gaijin, and take the superiority complex to the next level.

Don't run into many but the ones that you do are really looney. On the other hand, most Japanese don't want to return to Japan to live after realizing you can work less, get payed more, have more freedom, flexibility, space, and live cheaper. (Why are we in Japan again?) Oh yeah...
