Linux is a bit of a task minded OS... if you're just goofing around, it's not exactly the good choice...

FG Lurker wrote:For me the biggest issue with OSX was the lack of standardized keyboard controls. Yes, you can do some things via keyboard but there are many that you can not do. Windows was designed from the beginning to be usable either with a mouse or via keyboard. The mouse is a great tool for many tasks but it also slows down many others. Having to constantly use the mouse to do small tasks that should be available by keyboard drove me close to insanity. In the end I abandoned the 300,000yen MacBook Pro and bought the T60.

very true and one big reason why i dont like macs... I can say that i use the keyboard for about 75% of the time just for navigating over the mouse... and it is sooo much faster to get things done. but, there are some programs/websites where keyboard navigation is just too troublesome or it was not made to be keyboard friendly.

Meh, I use BSD for my firewalls and Linux on a couple of file servers. Unix has never been any good as a desktop OS though.

You'z speak like gawker media... It all depends on what you mean by desktop OS...

I use a 6 monitors I7 2600 Ubuntu 10.10 for the Interactive broker Trader Workstation software and Trader Star. It's flawless... I would not even think aboot using windows for this, not even Mac OS to be honest...

(incredible the heat difference with the I7 9xx lineup, the 2600 box with 3 GEF210 video cards is nearly cold while the I7960 with one GEF570 need extra fans and cutouts while providing a warm windstorm under the desk )

It works perfectly well for what most people do with their PC. I only keep my Win7 box for blowing off other people's heads in BFBC2, that's the only thing I really need to have Windows for.

Debian Linux on our mobile phones, Fedora on the laptop and the server/wifey PC, and then there's my cheapo iPad 1. Although I am keen on getting my wife a new box to separate her goofing around from the server function.

The Fedora server (file/mail/media/VM/wifey's desktop) is now at 18 days uptime and counting, probably until kernel 3.0 comes out on the Fedora repos. This is largely thanks to taking a leaf out of Mr. Jobs' book and keeping Flash well away from it.

And I don't like Gnome 3. :smashpc:

I've been soooo fooked with their vietnam add on that i'm not even touching it anymoar... Was supposed to come discounted with a video card, but it was a download only, and after 6 month of various fights with their tech supports I gave up... Which is pathetic... since 1 it cost them nothing to give me the soft AND i supposedly paid for it... Screwing the real customers to hopelessly fight pirates... way to go kids...

And to add moar fun, the price diff of the video card without the offer is exactly the same price as the separate add on...

well... i decided not to do it for my Sony and instead... install fedora 15 on my work computer.

love it so far, just have WinXPProSP3 installed for the Windoze only programs and Fedora as my main OS.

only three issues thus far:
1. My microphone (built-in, laptop mic) didn't get installed... it was the ONLY thing that didnt ]http://www.fuckedgaijin.com/forums/images/vbimghost/37604e39399f4725a.jpg[/img]

Hah I completely forgot I posted this. What I meant was, why I love OSX is I do know Unix well and OSX blends a very nicely done UI over a Unix core (BSD based at that which is nice) which is probably a first really. So basically as you say and everyone agrees, *nix has never been good for the desktop, but here you get the best of both worlds. When I wanna be dumb and just click (most of the time) I get that but when I need to write some perl script to rename a 1000 files that I misnamed (did I mention I's dumb?) or traceroute a wonky server or whatever I just pop open a terminal and the man pages and all are there complete with jokes circa 1977.
