Wikipedia wrote:Ee ja nai ka was not linked to any political agenda] It was not uncommon, however, to express deep concern for the ongoing process of political destabilization that shook Japan at the same time and ultimately led to the downfall of the Tokugawa shogunate. [B]Disgust at Western and Christian foreigners, disappointment regarding the lack of political leadership and other signs of awakening national consciousness were frequently displayed. There is, however, no evidence for any political setup or staging of Ee ja nai ka, although this was also rumoured. Political authorities...never regarded it as a political threat.

Kinda makes me wonder what the protestors were thinking today.

Don't know... maybe... But I had a feeling of deja vu for quite some times now toward the behaviour of Tepco and the pro fallout Oyajis...
Finally could make the link while dreaming at the red light...

Last time I saw this kind of behaviour was in 1789... People supposedly in charge with no clues aboot what to do just thinking things will always be the same anyway. Except TIJ... and I aint see no beheading anytime soon...

Since when did demonstrations turn into an event for people to dress up like clowns?

I've seen this at WTO and G7 protests over the last few years. It looks less like a protest and more like a rave. Really makes westerners (including Japan) look like pussies and not so serious about what they are really trying to accomplish with the demos and protests, compared to what's going on elsewhere (i.e., Syria, Egypt, Libya). Wearing a clown outfit would severely hamper the distance one could throw a Molotov cocktail.

Back at the Uni, I had an international relations class that was discussing globalization. They interviewed protestors at the WTO and G7 protests and most could saying nothing more than "I'm here to protect my culture" while dressed like idiots to match. The prof asked what we thought about their cause...I don't think she liked our "illogical hippie idiot movement response" but the more of the interviews she played, the more idiotic they looked. (and the prof eventually caved in and admitted the movement was stupid.
