Never criticize anyone until you've walked several kilometres in their shoes.
Because

1. You're now several kilometres away; and

2. You've got their shoes.

There was a panel of journalists venting about this on the tube just yesterday. It seems that everyone is aware that the government plan is more geared toward ensuring TEPCO's survival than actually solving any current or future problems. It's a goddamn farce. The government and TEPCO conspire on an obvious scam that keeps them nice and comfy while dumping a huge burden on the people and nobody, no group, no organization, no division in government can or will do a damn thing about it.

Fucking dismal.

A Short Break for Some Niceness

Postby Yokohammer » Mon Aug 08, 2011 4:54 pm

The Sendai Tanabata festival has been on since Saturday. Today is the last day, so I went up with the wife and wandered around a bit. Many of the decorations this year are made up almost entirely of orizuru (folded paper cranes) representing prayers and hope for a quick recovery and bright future. Many of them also included written messages to that effect, some from overseas as well. Anyway, it was good to see so many smiling faces.

So a couple of pleasant pics, and then we can get back to sticking virtual needles in voodoo effigies of TEPCO and the gov't.

Not to be overly cynical, but it took them long enough to do an about face on this issue.

Ganbare Japan! You got fucked and poisoned by TEPCO and now you're going to pay to keep them and the corrupt government that supports them in power and being well paid.

I read Weekly Asahi Geinou in which there was a report that a Black (probably African Black) worker did a skin diving into the pool filled with highly-radioactive-contaminated water in Fukushima plant.
Im sorry for his remaining life....

Wow. You got a site for that Take, or is it just off the news stand? If news stand I'd like to know the date of the issue? There should be more interest in this for obvious reasons.....

Rice from town near Tokyo is radiation-free, tests show

By Yuko Takeo

TOKYO | Wed Aug 10, 2011 4:02am EDT

(Reuters) - Samples of rice grown in a town near Tokyo showed no radioactive materials when tested, officials said on Wednesday, a relief for farmers preparing to ship Japan's traditional food staple.

Concerns over food safety have grown after radiation from the smashed Fukushima Daiichi power plant has leaked across northern and eastern Japan since March, the world's worst nuclear crisis in 25 years.

Some local authorities are testing their rice to see if it contains too much cesium.

Rice grown in the town of Tako in Chiba prefecture, 240 km (150 miles) southwest of Fukushima, was tested this week to determine if more stringent checks are needed after the town measured high radiation in the ground, local officials said.

"The results are a relief, but we consider it as only part of the procedure to determine safety in rice consumption," said Shigetoshi Abe, a Chiba official in charge of food safety.

Tako's preliminary tests, the first to be carried out according to the farm ministry guidelines announced last Wednesday, showed its rice did not contain cesium of more than 200 becquerels per kg.

Still, if the rice fails further tests, Chiba will not allow rice shipments from that area.

At least 14 prefectural governments in north and east Japan, which account for more than 40 percent of the country's total rice output, said last week they would test their rice for cesium before harvest season.

Becquerels measure the ability of a substance to release radiation. Cesium-134, with a half-life of two years and cesium-137, at 30 years, could cause cancer years after exposure. Excessive levels of cesium have been found in vegetables and beef in Japan since the nuclear disaster.

Japan, which produced about 8.3 million tonnes of rice last year for food consumption, mostly eats its own produce. It imports about 770,000 tonnes a year.

Rice futures prices rose sharply this week amid radiation worries, but analysts say Japan is unlikely to step up imports.

Yesterday I drove from Beverley Hills of Japan (Denenchofu) to the wilds of Chiba on a State Visit with Catoneinutica. My old-school X-ray film badge got fogged (dangerous medical dose level over 20 mrem) somewhere in my drive through the middle of downtown Tokyo on Hwy 14 (Tama River --> Odiaba --> outskirts of Chiba City).
Guess what? We're ALL fucked.

Uh-oh.

Since you used to work in a radiation biology lab I assume you know exactly what you're doing.
Just a few questions to satisfy my curiosity:

1) Was the film fresh (and what type of film)?
2) Did you develop it yourself (and how)?
3) Did you compare the test piece of film with a control piece from the same lot that had not been exposed?
