DALIAN, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- China's refitted aircraft carrier platform left its shipyard at Dalian Port in northeast China's Liaoning Province on Wednesday morning to set sail for its first sea trial.

Military sources said that the trial is in line with the carrier's refitting schedule and will not take a long time. Refitting work will continue after the vessel has returned to the port.

The carrier was originally built by the former Soviet Union, which failed to complete the ship's construction before collapsing in 1991. The still-unnamed aircraft carrier was an empty shell when it was sold to Ukraine. Ukraine later disarmed it and removed its engines before selling it to China.

I hope they don't bury it. If they sink it, it'll make a nice reef (probably radioactive one at that, but maybe that will offset the mercury in the fish)....

Then he got back to try to look like an aircarrier... I don't know if Chinese sailor are superstitious... but this boat is just a big floating bondoogle of badluck waiting to ruin some admiral carreer...

With that bow curve, it could be turned into a ski jump.
Never criticize anyone until you've walked several kilometres in their shoes.
Because

1. You're now several kilometres away; and

2. You've got their shoes.

Hmm, foreign technology being reused by the Chinese. Worked fine with their version of the Shinkansen right?

Because they never really believed in the need for aircraft carrier either...
(and them steamy cats are not easy or cheap to implement on a small cooking oil boat, unlike nukies where pressurized steam is a free all you can eat byproduct...)

Maybe because AC are mostly for force projection and...

Unlike 50 years of cold war propaganda said... Them Russian were not exactly aboot taking over the world but more aboot minding their own business behing their puppet buffer states...

Therefore... a plenty of "don't fuck with me or i'll KEEEEL YOU" stuff (long range bombers, boomer subs), but not much "surprise pajama party, i'll bring the popcorm" stuff... Unless somebody somewhere made the cunning plan to send all those T72 and BTR80 to Washington by mail and expected them not to be lost in transit or blocked for paperwork in customs...

And also... where do you retrofit a catapult on this bondoogle:

Seems they also like to hide missile silos under the flight deck... leaving no more rooms for the steam pipez...

Yes, you are right, and they also bought a second one!
[quote]While experts' eyes may be on the sea trials of the Varyag, another vessel has been making waves in the Chinese media.

Like the Varyag, the Kiev is a former Soviet aircraft carrier. Like the Varyag –] more...

(yup... we really did use the deck of an aircarrier to move trucks from France to the Persian Gulf in 91', but at least it was the Clemenceau... I sort of don't see the rearward island on the deck of the Ford Class Carriers as a really bright idea...

It look designed by the accounting service, not by an airman... "so peeps, you will land on a moving patch of iron, rocked by the sea, and be kind enough to avoid the building on the right"...

Honestly... I would have done like for the Charles de Gaulle, as much forward as allowed by the front catapult...
