Buddha's Bath: Japanese woman "swept" over Niagara Falls in Canada
...Yahoo! News -- Mon Aug 15, 5:34 pm ET
NIAGARA FALLS, Ontario --
19-year-old Japanese student was swept over Niagara Falls and presumed drowned after falling from a railing along the Canadian side of the Niagara River, Niagara Parks Police said Monday.
The woman was visiting the falls with a friend at about 8:30 p.m. Sunday when she climbed over the railing and straddled it while holding an umbrella. The woman apparently lost her balance and fell into the water when she stood up to climb back over, police said. She fell into the swift-moving river about 80 feet upstream from the brink of the Horseshoe Falls...more...

They found a male instead

Postby Jack » Tue Aug 16, 2011 12:54 pm

BUFFALO, New York (Reuters) - A college student who overstepped a safety railing fell into Niagara Falls over the weekend and searchers looking for her body on Monday found an unidentified male body instead.

The 19-year-old international student from Japan was presumed drowned after she plunged into the fast-flowing waters near the brink of Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side of the falls at about 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, according to Canadian park police.

She had climbed over a railing and straddled it while enjoying the view with a friend, police said.

"The young woman stood up in what appeared to be an attempt to climb back over when she lost her balance and fell," reads a statement from Canadian park police.

No foul play is suspected in the incident, police said.

The woman's identity was withheld pending notification of her family in Japan.

With a helicopter hovering above, an international search party scoured Niagara Falls Gorge for her body. On Monday, she remained missing but searchers instead spotted an unidentified male body at the base of the falls in an area known as the whirlpool, police said.

I dunno, if we're lucky, they found the right body.

She's been identified as Ayano Tokumasu. Canadian media has a photo from her Facebook page.

Police say a body recovered Thursday morning from the Niagara River is that of a Japanese student who fell over the railing on Sunday.

In a press release issued Friday from the Niagara Parks Police Service, police said New York State Parks Police confirm the identity of human remains "are those of the young woman who was reported falling into the water of the Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side of the border."

Ayano Tokumasu, a 20-year-old Japanese student studying in Toronto, fell over the railing on Sunday, Aug. 14. She was trying to snap a photo at the time.

Niagara Parks Police said they have notified next-of-kin, but they will not be releasing the identity of the body.
New York State Park Police said a body was spotted at approximately 10 a.m. on Thursday by an employee at Cave of the Winds, near the lower Niagara.

Park Police and firefighters recovered the body about 30 metres below the tourist attraction.

This is a tragic accident of course, but why do people get up on those rails? Honestly, what a foolish thing to do.

The YouTube vid showing the other genius chick who was up on the rails was also really tragic.

While holding a camera and an umbrella, and since she was a J-girl, I'll also speculate wearing high heels.

Darwin notwithstanding, a sad ending to an all too short life.

I was gonna post a picture of her from her Facebook page as she is very very cute but I couldn't figure out how to do it.

On a serious note, I have been to Niagara over 35-40 times because that's the only tourist attraction in/near Toronto and I have always said that it was very dangerous. The barrier si very low and it is right up to the edge of the falls. If you fall down you're straight in the fast moving water - nothing to hold on to. In fact I remember some years ago when I saw the nets on Japan overpasses which I thought were a good idea to catch not only falling people but also objects onto oncoming cars, I proposed the same solution to the Niagara Parks Commission but they laughed at me.

This girl is not the first one to fall over. There has been many incidents like that because the observation deck is so close to the water that it attracts adventurous youths.

In Canada they freakout about stupid things like second hand smoke but they do nothing on clear and present danger. Why? Because they want to save money. Putting up a better barrier costs money.

No, people shouldn't sit on or climb over the railing. We can't idiot proof the world. If we did, you'd be locked down 24/7.

Jack, why didn't you suggest Japanese style signage and announcements to the parks commission? Something like a tall chainlink fence topped with barbwire around a small pond, and signs every 10 meters or so with abunai! and some anime character with crossed arms doing the dame! thing. And it wouldn't be complete without loudspeakers blaring messages about how dangerous and area it is from dawn to dusk.

And no people should jump in front of oncoming subway trains and yet some people do and that's why they build barriers.

I don't give a damn about what you think. She is right up there in the high numbers on my cute scale.

As for all the bullshit on here is because she is Japanese. If a white bitch had done the same thing in Japan this board would light up with accusations of how lax Japanese blah blah blah is and that's why the sacred life of a white female was needlessly lost.

The bullshit as you call it is because the girl, whatever her nationality, was stupid for sitting on the rails in the first place. It has nothing to do with her being Japanese or not. It only rated a mention here as it was Japan related.

I think that I mentioned previously, there was another girl (white) in the youtube video who was also sitting on the rails. I called her a "genius" sarcastically as she was also stupid IMHO. So your accusation misses the mark on all counts.

Why am I even bothering with this though? Clearly you are not interested in a discussion and are just trying to point out perceived racism by FG members against Japanese and failing miserably.

As GG pointed out, the only reason her nationality is in here is because, dun dun dunnnnn this is forum for discussing everything Japan/Japanese. Yeah, I had a laugh when I saw her pics on FB, typical j-girl ryugakusei sent to Canada (likely because Amerika is percieved as too dangerous with guns!! abunai!) doing the tourist thing with friends. Really sucks for her family and I can only imagine how they must feel. On the other hand, I can actually picture her ignoring the warning signs and climbing up there with the umbrella to strike some stupid pose and get a new pic for her FB. Stupid behavior, regardless of nationality/race/etc. Had she been white, black or whatever, and it happened in Japan under similar circumstances, we'd think the same. Challenge Darwin with enough stupidity and you're bound to lose eventually.
