Long time reader of the blog, and just decided it would be cool to chit chat with other FGs. Look forward to BSing about "life" in Japan.

Time Served: 2 years Okinawa, 3 more expected in Tokyo.

The rose-tint of Japanese life wore off about the first year and I've become delightfully cynical/appreciative of the culture I've immersed in. I find myself spending more time making friends with other gaijin than I do with the locals and I'm OK with that. LOL.

Never criticize anyone until you've walked several kilometres in their shoes.
Because

1. You're now several kilometres away; and

2. You've got their shoes.

Ugh, I used to work at the Kyoto branch. So happy to be out of there but with how things are going, I don't think they'll be around much longer.

I joined here a while back... my amount of lurking depends on how busy I am at work. Lately, very busy. Today I almost blew a fucking gasket so I'm taking a mandatory break.

Long timer: Lived here 11/13 years...slowly approaching 12/14. I love Japan (specifically Tokyo) but like everyone else, have no problem pointing out it's seemingly endless issues that prevent it from ever unfucking itself. I do the same with America, and especially my home state of Texas (Yeeehaw). I don't eat meat, I think guns are for homos, I support gay marriage and legalization of weed, and I hate country music. So yeah, leaving wasn't entirely my own doing.

Anyway... hopefully I'll be around more, as most of the banter here is right up my alley.

That was misleading. Very governmental of me. I eat fish. ;)
I've actually known vegetarians that are like, "fuck this -- I'll just eat fish" when they move here long term.

Ahhh, the bastards I was with wouldn't even eat fish....and you know how accommodating Japanese restaurants are when it comes to custom orders  Finding a place to eat literally took an hour and that was followed by an hour of "but but but the Japanese places back home~~~" One of them died a year later due to health complications...healthy life my ass!

Hitler was the most honest advertisement for vegetarianism I know...not only was he a meglomaniac, he also suffered from chronic flatulence.

I guess the Nazi salute was the volkstyle equivalent of pulling an extended finger?

Definitely not. Most people never peg it, but they assume I spent time in Austin (which is where I went to school). My stance on gay marriage is my same on just about everything: who the fuck am I to tell someone they're doing it wrong? I don't even have enough time to focus on my own shit.

Ahhh, the bastards I was with wouldn't even eat fish

A friend of mine books foreign DJs. One he brought at New Years was vegetarian... pretty strict. We went to an Izakaya. They missed out on a lot. So yeah, I know -- it sucks. There's a handful of vegan restaurants around town, but in a city of 13 million you'd expect there to be more than 5. ;)

I guess my favorite fish that I can just eat any time is Miso-yaki Saba.

At least vegetarians from India generally eat poultry, fish and seafood.

Australian here. Been lurking this forum for a few months now (looking for information about earthquake and radioactive fallout). Had aspirations of moving to Japan for a year but not so sure now since how poorly the J government have been dealing with the situation.

Postby Yosh » Thu Dec 08, 2011 7:08 am

Hi. Nice to meet you. Sometimes I go to Japan, and sometimes I don't. I'll be going for Christmas and new years this year. Gonna stock up on Peanut Soft. In my spare time I create "computered animations" People even pay me to do it - what a great system! Long term plan is to open up shop in Japan and hire the locals to work for me on overseas contracts. I like FG. Communication over.

It's even more unique when you consider how many of them get removed before you even get a chance to see them. If I ever find out there is an actual country called 123456, I am going to find a way to nuke it.

The truth is my wife and I are looking to make the permanent move in a few years. These forums have been valuable in helping me guide my decisions. I know for a fact that I will not make any efforts to blend in with the locals as I value my sanity too much. I will also not seek employment with any Japanese company for the above stated reason - however, in my experience it has been always wise and prudent to hire Japanese people as they are reliable, hard working and consistantly undervalue their own skills. The combination makes for a profound business edge.

I'm looking forward to spending more time in Japan but hope to find a good home outside of the big cities. In my worthless opinion, the Japanese countryside is one of the most idyllic and underrated places on earth, second only of course to Georgian Bay.

Happy to meet, sorry to part, happy to meet again.
