Banzai! Japan will be delighted! They can fix the whole fucking thing up just by covering it completely in concrete!

This is being presented as good news?

Tepco: Radiation release plunged

Of course any reduction in nuclear diarrhea the plant is spewing around the countryside is welcome, but what's out there is out there, and the initial release was huge.

I can't help but get the feeling that the desired response is a sigh of relief and a hearty round of congratulations to TEPCO for a job well done, but the reality is that they are guilty of the biggest nuclear fuckup and subsequent displays of incompetence and duplicity the world has ever seen. The problem is far from over yet.

Lest we forget ...

OK here.
It was a shindo 4 here in Watari. A loud and scary one though.

M6.8 off the coast. That's pretty big.

The wife is in Tokyo at the moment, and she just texted to say that she felt it there too.

Wanted to know if the cats are OK. I guess the reasoning is that if I'm capable of telling her the cats are OK, I'm OK as well. Kinda roundabout, but what the hey.

The Tsunami warning has just been lifted.

At least she doesn't text the cats to ask them if you're ok. Then again, those types of "cat women" don't look like Halle Berry and usually live alone.

And now it is proven beyond a shadow of a doubt: TEPCO's repeated-ad-nauseum claims that the earthquake and tsunami were "souteigai" (unpredictable) turn out to be another load of steaming bull:

Japan Decides How to Dispose of Cesium-Tainted Ash

Jiji Press English News Service
August 27, 2011

Tokyo, Aug. 27 (Jiji Press)--The Environment Ministry plans to allow ash of debris and garbage contaminated with radioactive cesium to be disposed of in ordinary landfills if the amount of cesium is 100,000 becquerels per kilogram or less, ministry officials said Saturday.

The ministry concluded that such ash can be disposed of safely if measures are taken to prevent radioactive cesium from making its way into groundwater, the officials said.

Such measures will include cementing the tainted ash and using roofed disposal facilities to prevent the ash from coming into contact with water and flowing out.

After disposal in landfills, drainage of the disposal facilities and nearby groundwater will be monitored, the officials said.

Since the nuclear crisis started at Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s radiation-spewing Fukushima No. 1 power plant, the ministry has so far requested that if radioactive cesium in excess of 8,000 becquerels is detected in ash at incineration facilities, the ash should be stored temporarily until the disposal method is decided.

As for ash containing cesium of over 100,000 becquerels, the ministry is considering the use of concrete-walled disposal facilities for industrial waste, according to the officials.

Also on Saturday, the ministry published results of a survey on ash at 469 garbage incineration facilities in 16 prefectures in the Tohoku northeastern region and the Kanto eastern region.

As of Wednesday, radioactive cesium of over 8,000 becquerels was found at 42 facilities in seven prefectures, including Fukushima and Ibaraki, according to the survey.

The highest level was 95,300 becquerels measured in the city of Fukushima.

The no-entry zone around the crippled plant, which was heavily damaged by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, and nearby areas in Fukushima Prefecture were not covered by the survey.

here is a good idea... any produce, meat, fish, etc. from tokyo on up should not be eaten... easy?

my MIL showed my my niece's kodomonoshimbun and it was explaining how to prepare food do reduce the amount of radiation consumption...

first thing that came to my mind was... why the fuck are you eating contaminated food. they bitch about american beef (mad cow) but eating contaminated food is ok...

my MIL and FIL asked about the quality of american produce and meat/fish etc. and i said it was far beyond the quality of japan... they were dumbfounded and asked how american produce is better than japans... simply, we have a whole fucking continent that we grow stuff on and mad cow just gave them a negative image... plus we sell our fruits and vegetables to other cuntries for a high price and buy south america's products for cheap...

Japan... get off your asshat, import some food (how about FTA with NZ if that hasn't passed yet?) and quit feeding people contaminated food... like you didn't know that cows from that area weren't being sold for consumption... my ass...

:nihonjin: :/

I share the consternation evident in your sarcasm. I find it completely inexcusable that so many months after 3/11 those in charge are incapable of carefully monitoring the supply chain in order to prevent such incidents from occurring.
