I saw this story on the TV this morning. How fucking stupid can you get?

ISHIKAWA — A married couple died Saturday night after falling into a pit dug on a beach in Kahoku, Ishikawa Prefecture, rescue workers said. Police identified the victims as Hiroki Demura and his wife Risa, both 23.

According to a report on NHK, Risa and five friends dug a 2.5-meter-deep hole on Friday afternoon as a birthday surprise for her husband. When they went back to the beach on Saturdxay night with their friends, the Demuras fell in and their upper bodies were covered by sand.

1. how wide was the hole
2. i take it that either:
A) they were covered in sand trying to escape
B) their friends thought it would be fun to cover them with sand...
3. same thing happened to an elementary school kid (on school grounds) but it was a game not a "surprise"
4. it was covered by a blue tarp... why did they step on it? seems a little red flagish to me...
5. why did it take 45 minutes? this was a "surprise" hole... wasn't the group just itching to see the couple fall in the hole? sorta like a "suprise b-day party" where everyone decorates the place and hides until the couple get back...?...?

According to the show I saw this morning the hole was 2.5 meters deep and had a mattress in the bottom to break the fall. The tarp was covered with sand to hide it with extra mounds of sand around the edge of the hole to hold the tarp into place. The couple fell in head first and the tarp pullled the sand down around them so they were burried head first with their feet sticking out. Remember too that the wife was in on the gag.

Also have to wonder just how much sand they piled up around the tarp and (assuming it was a large amount) why no one realised that it would get pulled in.
