Man Tries to Set Fire To Shibuya Clubgoers

23 year old Satoshi Shimano has been arrested following an incident at the Chelsea Hotel in Shibuya, across the road from Tokyu Hands. The club is in a basement and is mainly a venue for live music performances. It appears Shimano took petrol, or some other similar substance into the club and began spraying it around inside, shouting that he was going to kill everyone. Audience members quickly fled outside but some were later taken to hospital, overcome by fumes. Staff managed to wrestle the man to the ground and it appears he wasn't close to starting a fire. Police are treating it as a case of attempted murder and arson. I can't recall whether the Chelsea Hotel allows smoking - other clubs run by the same group don't - but many live venues still do, so the outcome could have been far worse.

Blocked fire escapes, the whole block going up in flames, etc. etc.?

Of course it would be all over the news with talks about fire safety codes.

...2 months later nobody would be held accountable, it couldn't be helped, and the block would get rebuilt one by one with even smaller fire escapes (eventually to be blocked off for storage) and no sprinkler system.

It will be interesting to see of more clubs do decide to introduce smoking bans. Many new venues have introduced them so there is already a trend that way. You might think some nutter flinging petrol around would be a fairly flimsy basis for a sea change but it doesn't take much to start the ball rolling.

i went to one new place in roppongi a month or so back and you could only smoke in the back of the club where the ash trays were. it wasn't a small cramped place so you couldn't even tell if people were smoking.

it was really nice to sit down and not get smoke blown in my face... but when i drink i like to smoke sometimes so it dont matter that much... cigars do piss me off though...

The Yomiuri says Shimano was arrested 6 years ago for hitting a 4 year old boy with a hammer in a public park. He was arrested and sent to reform school.

Good to see that reform school helped to curb his psychological problems. :-?

Seriously disturbing, sound like it's just a matter of time before he would go berserk again, do you all think being jailed could change him?
