Hey Tokyo guys (and girls)!
Your electricity bill is likely to be at least 10% higher next year! Quite possibly more.
Aren't you just delighted that TEPCO and the government have your best interests at heart and are willing to make deep sacrifices to atone for fucking up half the country through their own stupidity and greed?

I just bought a whole new array of LED bulbs for the new apartment. Going to go with a gas stove over IH...same goes for heating come winter. Appears that the only way to actually fuck TEPCO is use as little of their electricity as possible. If I was a home owner, I'd already have the roof covered with solar panels.

One can hope, however, the reaction of the government & its citizens thus far in light of the triple disaster of 3/11 (quake, tsunami, meltdown) is not encouraging.

Don't know if this has been posted yet, but here is what looks to be a viable replacement/alternative to nuclear energy using more efficient wind turbines.
Whether or not it gets support and funding in Japan is another story...

Someone might have posted this one earlier but I've only just seen it. It really brought back memories of how the quake felt that day, particularly the waves of intensity.

You'll need to understand German or read Japanese to follow the clip above from "Frontal 21" on the ZDF network. It has caused a minor stir on the web because, shortly after it appeared, the clip was taken down on account of a copyright claim by Fukushima Central TV. It turned out the original clip included a shot of the Fukushima plant exploding. Netizens were incensed that the station would use such a flimsy pretext and suspected that the intention was to censor the content. I doubt whether that's true: it sounds more like just a typical heavy-handed copyright response. Nevertheless, the cropped version has now gone viral.

Posted a topic on this forum about building a BOB (bug out bag) for our family and got a link to this incredible thread. Soooo much down-to-earth info about radiation protection, detection, etc. etc. Hard to take it all in at once but definitely worth a read.

In two words Helen Caldicott. If you believe her, then and it is scary. If you think she is has a history of bullshitting and is essentially a propagandist, then you might take her words with a heart attack inducing grain of salt.

It's both too "true" and sort of false.

All us independent geiger counter crazies (you have to be crazy to own two different types of radiation detectors like me and all the http://www.radiation-watch.org/ folks) cannot detect any significant contamination in the food we are checking.

However, the Yokohama schools have admitted to serving hinky food and the Yokohama pool in Nakahara-ku that's 1,9000 meters from my house has got a "hot spot" (the assholes did not close the pool immediately). On the other hand, the Yokohama government radiation networkcannot detect anything bad and the independent citizens like me are getting the same readings. I really want to prove the fucking J-government wrong, but when I drive across the Tama River and take measurements next the official monitoring stations, I get about the same readings, meh.

Taro, you got one of those build-into-a-Frisk-box detector thingies?

Cool! Especially if it's giving you readings that are pretty close to the official numbers.

The really nice (and important) thing about lots of people owning radiation detectors is that it makes it really difficult for the authorities to disseminate readings they've pulled out of their ass. More readings means more accuracy too. The more the merrier!

EDIT: Forgot to mention. Our local Daishin home center now has Chinese made Geiger counters for sale for around JPY 38,000 (I think it was), and they're renting them out for a small fee as well, for people who want to do a quick check without having to buy the thing. Radiation detectors everywhere!

No Taro, the article referred to is pretty much a pile of shit. Even a brief scan reveal statements that are false. The reaction did not melt down within hours of the earthquake, one reactor did and the other did three days later. As for Caldicoot's assertion that Fukushima is worse then Chernobyl the claim is extremely unikely and like many of her 'findings' seems to have been pulled directly from her ass.

TEPCO's Generosity Astounds!

Postby Samurai_Jerk » Sat Sep 03, 2011 3:15 pm

TEPCO to pay compensation to Fukushima evacuees from Oct

Compensation amounts announced so far include a 5,000 yen flat fee for transportation costs and 8,000 yen per night for accommodation. It is estimated that the company will pay out around 56,000 yen per household, to around 150,000 people.

As usual for T= Sept 3 15:51 Fukushima might not yet be as bad as tchernobyl... just wait untill the melted reactor goo hit the underground water table, start shitting hydrogen... and blow 4 th of july style...

Becase avoiding this problem was clearly on of the top priority during tchernobyl crisis... while it's still in denial here...

Interestingly, both Toyo Keizai & Shukan Diamond have similar front cover stories this week. The economics magazines look at potential problems with this year's rice crop, Diamond looking at whether radiation checks are adequate while Toyo Keizai wonders whether Japan has enough rice.

Somehow, I doubt whether even radiation will deter the enormous subsidies paid to rice farmers (and sustaining the massive bureaucracy eating off maintaining this totally unprofitable crop).

The nuclear crisis has provided Japan with an opportunity to fundamentally reform so many aspects of the cuntry, including its rice crop, but TIJ...

...I guess they should just concrete over the whole fucking thing.
