Photo essay: Where children sleep

Recently, the charitable organization Save the Children asked documentary photographer James Mollison to come up with an idea to get people thinking about the rights of children around the world. What he came up with was an unusual, but powerful project: a photo essay of more than 200 children and their bedrooms, called "Where Children Sleep."


Four-year-old Kaya lives in Tokyo, where her mother spends $1,000 per month on her wardrobe:

Probably not something you have to worry about if you can spend that much a month on a 4 year old's wardrobe.

i bet that lil girls mom probably laughed when the guy told her why he wanted to take pitures of her daughter and her room...

really sick how much money someone would spend to spoil their kids...

but none the less the girl may be a future FG hunter... would not mind having a legal age girl that i could remarry to and spend 1G a month on my wardrobe/bar/computers/games/whatever..

I guess the mother has a fair income.

It isn't just this kid that this excess will affect, it will affect all the other kids she knows who will hassle their parents for loads of stuff too. This kid will probably come through alright, she'll never have to study hard or work for a living while she waits for some guy to marry the money. It's all her friends who will get into debt fueling shoe addiction.

Obviously at four it's not so much being a spoiled brat, but more that your mother thinks of you as a plaything and considers the money she spends on you as a hobby.

If you're say, 8, then you're probably spoiled.

A little off topic, but pertaining to kids and rooms. Have you ever noticed that most, if not all hikikomori kids come from middle ir upper class homes. The reason being, their rooms have everything they need, computer, tv, game console, tons of manga! They most likely don't share it with anyone either. But if you are lower middle class or below, you don't have all these comforts, and probably live in a small enough house or apartment, that you couldnt commandier a whole room for yourself.

It's not the room that allows someone to become a hikikomori... it's their parents and other enablers who keep them fed and housed for free without demanding they either get a job, leave the house, or seek serious mental help.

I think it just happens that most people who tend to be hikikomori also just have a lot of stuff in their rooms. If all you do is hangout in your room and you have a credit card to buy stuff online, you're probably going to have a lot of crap.

None of the kids in that article looked representative of ordinary kids. They all look so glum. :-(

Yeah, that was obviously a choice by the photographer to make the kids look depressed as hell. I wonder why.
