Cheap way to transport a motor scooter

Postby canman » Sat Sep 03, 2011 1:44 pm

My son will soon finish his final year at university and he wants to ship his scooter home. He was quoted Y59000 to shipit from Shiga-ken to Hachinohe, Aomori-ken. That seems pretty steep. Does anyone know of a cheaper way to get it home, other than me taking the train down and trying to ride a 50CC scooter 1400km?

Takkyuubin? Or is that the one quoted 59000 Yen?

what he said..

that or go on a 1400km adventure before it gets too cold. let's say for the sake of argument you get about 55km/l, which from my web searches seems to be a typical mileage. you could probably do it for about 3500 yen give or take. even if i'm out by a factor of 2, it's still cheap. fill 'er up, grab a couple of onigiri and you're good to go ;)

You could try paying someone to ride it for you. There might be some young kid who fancies the challenge. They could always blog about it.

Very good suggestion. A friend ferried a van (loaded with household goods) from Sendai to Okinawa for about the same price (6 man en) five or six years ago.

Canman,

[Half Joking]

Why not do the trip yourself, but get sponsored so it doesn't cost?

"Crazy gaijin rides genchari from Shiga to Aomori to raise money for 3/11 disaster relief!"

Heck, you might even make money on the deal!

Hmm ... to make it even cooler maybe you should ride the full length of Honshu.
Ship the bike down to Hiroshima and start from there!

Of course little things like having a job could make this sorta difficult, but you have to admit it'd be a really cool thing to do.

omae mona wrote:Well, I thought I'd do Canman a favor and find him the really great rate Yamato Takkyuubin was likely to offer. I got a great price from them on shipping a fridge across the country a few years ago. So I filled out the info on their website and the following estimate appeared:

So much for bargains..

I ferried a washing masheen Nagoya-toyohashi few month ago... and there was a separate line item- billed for every accessory... AND they wouldn't carry it without all the factory approved restrains on the mobile part. I had to argue for hours and fax them a waiver in case of damages.

15000 yens...

Should have brought it home by train... (for a second hand 10000 yens sayonara sale WM... BUT she warm water up to 60 degres...)

Have you checked with motorbikes club or shops ? they might have facilities or agreement for these kind of transfer, while for Yamato it's more... something they can do because somebody wrote the protocol and billing item line for it on their computer system... But they do it only every 7th full moon...

Good idea Coligny - a lot of bike shops bring in/ship out used bikes, so that may be a good angle to explore.

Some shops may have contracts with Yamato, and this will drastically lower the price. I know from Yahoo auctions that shops typically send windsurf board across Japan (except places like Okinawa, etc) for 3000 Yen. When you ask Yamato individually, it runs above 10,000 Yen. Similar pricing policy may also apply to bikes.
