Fuck gaman...

Postby gaijinpunch » Wed Sep 07, 2011 1:44 pm

Am I the only one getting sick of this whole gaman attitude? Natural disasters aside, gaman-ing seems to be something one would do when he doesn't have the balls to say, "you know what... I totally fucked up . My bad."

Japan's economic fist-fuck is nobody's fault other than it's own, and self-imposed is the only way I would describe the demographic crisis. From what I can tell, Japan has done nothing significant to shift populations to the countryside either.

Every time I go into an old house in the winter, I can see my fucking breath. Why would a nation that went from rags to riches (ranked #2 in the world for a long time), who has ZERO natural resources (and not to mention lies to everyone saying it's so efficient) go through such an uncomfortable life style when all they need to do is adopt a new technology item called insulation?

I know it's a rant, and maybe I sound like I'm kicking a 3-legged dog, but gaman seems to me to be a good quality to have, but a terrible fucking attitude. Amirite?

we all think the same shit man... cept for mcblowjob and takechinc...

japanese are relectant to change... they still make units with tatami mats...
they still fill up the bathtub to get a bucket of water to rinse off when there is a shower head...
they eat sushi when they are pregnant cause they are japanese O_o...
they still work 12 hours a day cause they are doing it for the company, but they bonus still gets cut (not bonus, just deferred salary but with nicer words)...
they still claim hate on FGs even though they want many tourists to come and spend money...
they still want the 'merican soldiers out of their cuntry eventhough their own soldiers cant deactivate post WWII land mines or protect their coastlines...
they are in a fucked posistion with population growth but FGs have helped sexless housewives, knock up their single fugly/fat/old* girls,

... my son just woke up and started hacking his lungs out again... poor lil guy.

*japanese statndard of fugly/fat/old == a 5 in the west/5'5 and 110 lbs/30years+

Hard headed xenophobes that run the country want to keep the cuntry as Japaneeeeze as possible...

No warnings about hanging your clothes out to dry in the radiation. We know what they found in air filters in Tokyo...can't imagine what kinda shit wet clothes picked up. Yet the drying machines go unused...

I'll gladly take a blend of the gaman and the western get'er done attitude. At least with the gaman attitude you don't have to hear endless bitching and moaning about how much someone's pussy hurts.

I guess this is my point... the 'ganbarou' rants of late seem to be befitting. But the more traditional 'gaman' is just stupid. I try to draw a fine line between gaman and TIJ. Maybe I'm just being a hopeless romantic? I'd give them the benefit of the doubt in some of IParryU's list. But the insulation one doesn't make sense. It's cheaper AND more comfortable. It's like they whole country is showing off.

I guess in short, I'm realizing way too late that gaman truly doesn't mean "perservere" but to just sit around w/ a your cock in your hand and pray for the best.

as a country bumpkin who, for the last 12 or 13 years, has been living in a 70-tsubo refridgerator / freezer from november-april which also doubles as an easy-bake oven during most of july and august, i hear ya. i also hear you about the lack of.. fertility options out where i am.

fwiw, newer houses are (so i'm told) more comfortable year-round. i think a lot of the gaman thing comes from simply not knowing any better. when you don't know what you're missing, it's unlikely that you'll complain about it.

I'm sorry, what mythological japan do you live in?

I live in a Japan where:

1. Apartment building was designed to allow maximum sunlight in winter and minimalise in summer.

2. Same apartment has thick ass wall and insulation to built.

3. Heated floors, yes!

4. Heated toilet seat for cold winter mornings (how many of those do they have in your backwards countries? :winkb:)

5. Separate bathroom/toilet. Very civilized and not smelly.

BTW - what's wrong with taking water from the bath tub to rinse? I mean you've already paid for the water twice (once for heating, once for the water itself), why spend more money and literally wash it down the drain?

Nope, not a lot of gaman going on around my part of Japan.

Even the new HQ of Shimizu Corp. has less than R-4 without vaporbarriers

In Tokyo proper insulation is unheard of---Hokkaido yes, Kanto/Kansai no.

Even when insulation is attempted in new "eco homes" in upscale Tokyo, the vapor barriers are ALWAYS missing or screwed up. Likewise, even when the rare dual-pane windows are installed in new construction, weatherstripping is not used and the windows have uninsulated metal frames. Any "thick ass walls" are just concrete---any insulation is trivially thin (R-4 or less). Solar considerations for "maximum sunlight in winter and minimalise in summer" is so rare I cannot think of a single new building in my rather wealthy neighborhood that has that (although traditional Japanese farm houses were built that way).

Finally, Japanese "Heated floors" and "Heated toilet seats" (using wasteful electrical coils) are a cludge because houses Kanto and Kansai are so crappily built and cold in the winter.

Bottom Line: What mythological Japan do you live in?

No shit. Everytime I visit the US I'm reminded just how poorly built Japanese building are.

I was once told that the reason they don't use insulation in Kanto is it's not that cold in the winter. I really think the average Japanese person has no idea that insulation also keeps things cool in the summer.

when my wife and i were considering building here, the builder insisted that the insulation would have to be to the standard determined for the entire prefecture, with no consideration for the fact that despite being only an hour away from their office, due to a difference of 450m in elevation, our winters are much harsher. they'll get rain while we get 50cm of snow. it often gets as cold as -10, occasionally -15 which, though laughable by canadian standards, without insulation, is damn cold. i've recorded indoor temps in our house dipping below zero. it boggles my mind that houses where i am aren't built to a standard more like hokkaido. heating, insulation, (off topic - pizza and sandwiches) are for me four things that i think they'll just never get right here. admittedly, this is by my culturally biased western point of view.

four seasons my ass - there are two indoor seasons: comfortable (sept/oct, may/june) and not.

Okay... if you're in the boonies, yes, they suck big balls and sandwiches, but there are some lovely ones around town. Viron in Shibuya has a ton of good ones, Paul (international chain, but it's still awesome), Aux Bacchanalles or however the fuck you spell it, and now a great falafel joint in Shibuya.

Pizza's a lost cause.

You are again talking out of your ass. You should get your facts straight before you fart a sentence. Houses in the place where we live are all very well built. That quality of craftsmanship is non-existant in your country or mine. Now if you live in a shit little park on cardboard, that's another issue. But our place is A-1 although we heat each room separately. I will not argue with the lack of insulation, and I have heard all the bullshit reasons, but the quality of houses is far from being crappy.

Look, I will punch anyone who tells me "we Japanese" bullshit again just as much as the next guy. But I think you guys focus way too much on the negatives.

What the fuck am I defending? in 15 to 20 years Japan will be just another has been country surpassed by China, Brazil, Turkey, India and half dozen other countries.

that was a loud fart right there jack...

houses are in general nice, but lack the craftsmanship of the internal parts of the house.
very nice walls (cheap)
very nice wood floors (cheap)
betsu betsu toilet bath (less m^2 bath unit for a seeming luxury...)

what they lack:
proper insulation (not just in the walls, but any frame for doors and windows)
pluming (the septic tank is not deep enough and the city pluming is complete shit in general... shoganai)
electrical (constants are typically at odd locations and phone/antenna are not planned locations but convenient for the installer)
flooring (its hallow for floor heating installation... insulation > heated/chilled floors)
ventilation (don't see central AC that much... same goes for venting as it usually is just a fan on a wall that lets bugs and cockroaches in easier...)

now if you were to talk about the craftsmanship of their wooden temples... that is what you would call god like... 15 ~ 30 piece corner mounts, no nails/screws or adhesive, yaaa buddahyyyyy

just watched them rebuild tengenji from my back window for the past year+... that was pleasurable seeing how they did it.

but the "mansions" that they build... I was helping my dad remodel shit holes like that 20+ years ago. when remolding shit holes like that... strip the walls/ceiling/floor, re-route/pair/do the electrical and replace the terminals, replace some specific pluming pipes, insulate, & sound pad, sheet-rock/log-cabin style/wood-wall, tape & top/polish & anti-wet/rot, flooring (carpet/vinyl, wood, marble, whatever) and you have a band new fucking house.

if it is hallowed out... you just built a home for rodents and insects... and doing the above is what the standard is for new houses in California... there is some type of code for it for some bs living standard.... blah.

"Gaman," "ganbaru," and "shoganai" and their variants need to be banned. Carry around a cattle prod and zap your Japanese friends and family every time you hear those terms uttered, because they're cognitive kill switches. Would you tolerate a Westerner who went around saying, "Well, it is what is," or, "Well, what are you gonna do?" repeatedly, endlessly, like some kind of moronic mantra? No way! You'd slap them silly.

Yes, stoicism is a virtue, and whining is annoying, but the Japanese have fetishized the "gaman" thing to the point where it means, "don't use your brain, don't think of alternatives, don't question why, just STFU and do what you're told."

Word up.

My dad used to build houses back in the 70s. When he visited Japan he was amazed by the craftsmanship at Meiji Jingu. He was equally amazed at just how poorly built all the modern buildings were (and I lived in an expensive newly-built designer mansion in Chiyoda-ku at the time).

So, as usual, Jack was just talking out of his ass. Fucking idiot.
