I did think of that issue, but the alternative is only people flush with funds having the opportunity to stand for election, which is not a perfect system either, so I can live with some kind of compromise. I reserve judgment on whether this is the best kind of compromise.

I do remember when I worked for a publicly listed company that became popular with foreign institutional investors, they were checking the share register periodically to confirm whether they were able to make political donations. Why a publicly listed company thinks making political donations is good use of shareholder's funds is another matter too.

Just a wild guess on this one (and of course it would depend on the type of company): political donations = a lenient attitude towards the company = more profit for shareholders?

Of course no japanese company (*cough* TEPCO *cough*) would ever consider such a thing. ;)
