Sorry to ask a really stupid question about Iphones, but does anybody know how I can extend the ring time for my emails and messages. I checked a million apple forum pages and maybe I was entering the wrong search criteria, but I couldn't get the answer I was looking for. All I want to do is have the mail sound play a few times so I can hear it, it will only play once now. Thanks.

AFAIK you cannot extend the ringtone time, or repeat.
What you could do however is just choose a longer ringtone.
Only problem is that without J/B'ing you cannot use custom ringtones for e-mail or SMS, only the phone ringtone.
See this article on TUAW for info on the "custom" SMS ringtones (only available for iPhone 4). Maybe some of them are longer (I have a 3GS so I don't know).
Apparently with iOS 5, one of the features will be customization of text tones, finally.

iOS 5 includes early earthquake warning notifications for Japanese iPhone users
9to5Mac | 2011/08/21
Following the devestating earthquake in Japan earlier this year, Apple has added a new early earthquake warning notification option to iOS 5. iOS 5 users in Japan can turn on early earthquake notifications at the very bottom of the iOS 5 Notification Center settings panel...more...

Yes, but if it's built into the OS it'll be far more reliable -- ie it will actually work.

Softbank's reputation for horrible iPhone service will make KDDI/au's sales easy provided au's price is within reason. I was to amused by CNN's blog leading their report saying, "Loathed Softbank ..."

Big uncontrolled leak usually brings contract cancellation with apple. (I don't remember well but some apple expo pre-leaks got a big hardware maker (I think ATI or NVidia) kicked in the nuts)

So by this reasoning, the leak might have come from Softbank to derail any plans with KDDI? :spin:

Kinda, sorta, on topic but does anybody know how much better AU's reception is than Softbank generally? Especially while hiking or camping up in the mountains or other remote places? Softbank cuts out pretty quick on hikes now and it's not always a ton of fun to know you are cut off with a few miles back to civilization (also nice other times though haha.)

A bit of a moot point I suppose because if iPhone 5 does come out on AU I'm switching in a heartbeat either way, but was curious.

Some of the problems with iPhone on Softbank might be caused by there all so many of them on there and it's straining their shitty network. au may end up seeing the same problems. The current Android users on au aren't eating as much now because Android users don't use their phones for non-basic telephone related things as much as iPhone users.

Even Google admits that 2/3 of the users of their mobile services are using iPhones.

Generally speaking, au has much much better remote coverage than Softbank, which is essentially useless in the backcountry. au and Docomo tend to have strengths in certain regions, so for example au has a good reputation in one mountain range and Docomo in another. Some people recommend going with a friend on the other network, so all bases are covered, so to speak.

I have had Softbank for a few years now (have to, since the wifey works for the company and customer support at that!) besides getting a discount on your internet service, overall the reception at SB "IS" sometimes horrible, compared to AU or Docomo. Softbank DOESN'T have the area coverage that the other two have. They are working on this problem, but you know when you hear that kind of talk in Japan what that means...
They (SB) have been saying for the last 4 years that they were going to increase their cell sites throughout Japan and have yet to see that happen and so far, nada!
So I think AU would most definitely be better in all around coverage. If I didn't have to be a slave to SB, I would have bailed a long time ago, not to mention AU has better looking phones anyway.

As wagyl and xenomorph42 mentioned, Softbank generally has poorer coverage to begin with, and it goes from crap to zilch in the outlying areas.
On top of that, I have the 3GS, and I've stood next to someone with a Softbank feature phone in a mountainous area with zero bars on my iPhone, while they had full reception (indicating that the 3GS anyway has poorer reception in the first place).

Really? Is that personal conjecture, or do you have some stats to back that up (just curious)?
I keep my eye on the domestic keitai scene, and I would have to disagree.
From what I have seen, Android users download their fair share of apps.
Of course there are far more iOS apps than Android, but apparently the number of Android users in Japan have recently passed the number of iOS users.

Here are two recent articles that refer to that topic:

The number of apps or the number of users means almost nothing if those apps or users aren't making anyone any money.

In the UK the rescue services are finding themselves quite busy retrieving hikers who thought they could use their smartphone GPS to negotiate the moors, then the battery ran out.
