how dare you! don't you know the ainu 'welcomed the japanese in 1881' because they wanted to be part of Japan Inc. and trust their future to the wonderful and wise bureaucrats who rule her? Stop your filthy 'white man's propoganda now'! Well, so said a student of mine once.....he insisted japan had no minorities because they were all one big happy family! :?

What kind of student was this? If the class wasn't about Japanese history, why talk about it?

Sorry, I just have too many bad memories of professors wandering off topic and into their own personal interests from college. No offense intended... if your students come back, you must be doing something right.

nooo.....

I dont think he's saying its off limits. I think he is saying its pointless.

It's an oxymoron. Teaching history in a Japanese classroom. BIG FREAKING JOKE. It's not history. It's revisionism. They cant even decide which version of lie they want to tell from decade to decade.
I will not abide ignorant intolerance just for the sake of getting along.

And it doesn't do you any good to talk about it with them... I mean, the goal is to provide the students with English sufficient enough to pass TOEFL and other certificate examinations, not teach them useful skills like debate and critical thinking. ;)
