The number of apps or the number of users means almost nothing if those apps or users aren't making anyone any money.

That second link just says Android users have better things to do with their time than stare at a little screen, like hooking up with the people they contacted on their phone in real life.

Totally off-topic now but yes, absolutely. In fact any kind of modern outdoor survival book or whatever you read these days makes this point over and over. Do not rely on GPS or expect your cell phone to work. Have a map and a compass and know how to use them. People are idiots and with the 'Yama Girl' boom here I'm surprised we don't see more incidents like that here.

They usually seem to cause a lot of collateral damage by way of rescue parties that have to risk life & limb to bring these Darwin Award candidates back to the flock.

Since the second article deals with wifi use in airports and in-flight, that hooking up is probably limited to the number of blowjobs they can give each other in airport and airplane toilets.

They do have solar powered chargers nowadays but last I checked, most smartphones aren't waterproof (I know we have some that are) and there are a number of other ways for it to fail so yeah, reliance only on your cellphone for guidance is retarded.

The new au catalogue has no entry for the iPhone but one small entry has slipped through the proofreaders. It appears at the foot of one of the pages:

I think this needs context. I am not interested enough to go to the nearest au shop and look at the catalogue, but might this just be suggesting that an iPhone specific application will be launched on that date? Especially as the preceding footnote is referring to data charges being levied.

(Reuters) - Japan's second-largest mobile carrier KDDI will sell Apple's new iPhone, the California-based company said, ending rival operator Softbank's highly profitable reign as the sole provider in Japan.

Shares in Softbank fell 2.8 percent in early trading, while KDDI fell 0.4 percent, compared with an almost flat Nikkei average.

(Fox Business) Apple iPhone 4S Fails to Wow Investors, Fans

Expectations were high at this critical juncture, when Android phones by Samsung Electronics and other rivals are closing in on Apple's lead and the important holiday shopping season gets started.

Investors and fans, looking to be blown away by some amazing surprise, sent the shares down as much as 5 percent before they recovered with the market to close down 0.6 percent.
Having the iPhone 4S available from au is a good thing, but I was seriously underwhelmed by the incremental "upgrade" from the iPhone 4.
When my 3GS contract runs out, I'll be looking seriously at an Android. The Galaxy SII is looking pretty good, with other Samsung and HTC models coming soon that have full HD displays.

A Bachelors in Japanese and 12 years of residence under my belt and there's a few things I don't understand:

-The fucked ATM system
-Why pubes are so fucking popular
-The telephone packages

I have an iPhone 4. My wife has an old turd, also from softbank. Both phones are in my name. If I get an iPhone 4s, can I give my wife my iPhone 4 and have her continue on the same contract? I think the iPhone gets some special SIM and maybe some other bullshit.

I know asking Softbank is the best but their documentation is clearly designed for Japanese to identify with: lines, arrows, charts, numbers... which could all be summed up in about 2 sentences, but the sales people can't even fucking do that.

from my understanding about switching phones... you put your sim card in the new phone and go to softbank to have them get a new sim card for your wife to put in your old phone?
your sim => new phone
wify sim => convert to iphone sim done by softbank

i can be wrong, but i dont think that you need a new contract with SB to get an Iphone if you have a contract with them already...

Word -- if this actually works, it'll probably be worthwhile for me to upgrade to a 4S. I looked at the Smartphone lineup on Softbank's page, but it's somewhat underwhelming... then again, I'm just looking at the cases.

Are none of them Android? At first glance, it seems like no. I couldn't imagine investing in another phone that wasn't Android or IOS, in the name of retaining data (easily) for a later phone.

The other caveat is that she wants oneseg. Might have to get her off that crazy idea.

EDIT: Maybe not;

Here is a simple intro of Softbank's fall/winter 2011 smartphone lineup on Tech Crunch (ENG). 8 out of 9 new models are Android.
You can see the complete Softbank smartphone lineup (JPN) here (goes back to falll/winter 2010).

There does not seem to be any official info on the iPhone 4S payment plans on either the au or Softbank sites yet, so here is a translated version of the fee structure.

Image

Softank is offering an incentive campaign to convince existing 3G/3GS users to switch to the iPhone 4S.
Campaign period is from Oct. 14 to Nov. 30 (iPhone 3GS or 3G customers only)

Upon switching to the iPhone 4S, the remainder of your subsidized payments for the existing 3G/3GS will be discounted as a monthly cash-back option.
If I understand it correctly, it means Softbank will absolve you of paying the remainder of your 3G/3GS contract as long as you switch to the iPhone 4S (16GB), or the iPhone 4 (16GB/8GB).
Are-Kore-Sore upgrade campaign (Japanese)
