I wonder if this means that Apple's "cool" is now going to be passed on to its labor practices?

Having gone into battle with Mr Jobs over the Newton pullout so many years ago we have always had a love/hate relationship.

We are sorry to hear of his passing. His vision changed the way we all interact with our computers. He will be missed.

RIP Steve.

I will say, no other man has changed the way society interacts with technology. 15 years ago, technology was innovated to and for businesses. Today, technology is innovative towards the consumers. You go to work and you say, "why can't my computer here do what my computer at home can do."

My first memories with Apple was learning BASIC on an Apple II with its monochrome green colored display. Good times.

Yep BASIC was awesome. I think my finest achievement was a little app that made a rocket launch up the screen. And then printed USA lol.

Yep I was thinking of coming back and adding the "lost" bit but it seemed to be kinda redundant as the Newton was discontinued. ;)

There is still a huge underground community though and we still sell software for the Newton OS. They have ported the Newton OS to a bunch of other form factors too. So the Newton didn't really die, it just remains as an un-dead. :D

ROFL Same here. Brings back memories of me a Citrus college doing the exact same thing, may, how far Apple has come. There will never be another Steve Jobs, that's for damn sure. The man was a great American a real modern Thomas Edison and gave the world a lot, changed it and made it a whole lot better, for me as a musician, Apple was a real Godsend.
Been using Apple for 16 years and hopefully always will. Don't know how Cook will be and where Apple will go from here, but one thing is for sure, America and the world has lost a great visionary and great innovator.

RIP, Steve Jobs

Except that Edison actually invented a lot of the things that his underlings invented that he ended up taking credit for. Actually, on second though, maybe you're right.

Except that Edison invented a heck of a lot more unique products than Jobs (by patent count alone Edison has 3X as many as Jobs). Jobs essentially created two products - the Apple II and the iPod. From those, the Mac, the iPhone and the iPad flowed.

I think that the reason people are kind of trippin' about Steve Jobs passing on is that over the past 15-20 years or so computers and more recently iPods/Phones have just taken over so many aspects of our lives. And we gave him the credit. He has the image of being the first great Generation X inventor who started out from meager beginnings, and did all of this that is around us every day is from him. The feeling is "Who could fill his shoes and make the next great string of things that will encompass our lives?" His face serves as the image of the instantaneous technological communication halcyon that the world has become. Maybe...maybe not, just trying to also figure out why I feel weird about this when I refuse to buy an iPhone, as I don't want to be that connected when I am out trolling for girls in Shinjuku.

Whatever for edison... that guy would sell shit on a stick if it could make him a buck or two.

But rating Steve Jobs buy number of invention or patent is as irrelevant as rating him for his top speed on highway or MPG rating... yeah, maybe you could find some numbers to back your statement... And even claim with a straight face that they have some meaning...

But the fact is, great part of the value of jobs is not in what he put, but in what he removed. Elegant design in a product is reached when there is nothing left to remove while still performing the task perfectly.

That's what made the works with Wozniak so successful. Woz is a brilliant engineer, but like a fireworks of ideas never really knowing where to stop.

The Iphone/IPad could have memoryslot (meaningless since there is no file manager), folding keyboard, backup tape reader, integrated laser printer and on and on... until you don't even remember what was the point of the original product... The Japanese are really good at screwing up like this (before, now, like Sony they openly fuck their customers), be it fashion or design they never know were to start or stop. And the limits are set only by greed arrogance or stupidiy.

The Mac 512 with EG Word was what did it for me. At last we could word process in Japanese. Still remember swapping all the floppy disks and the external floppy drive.
