This kinda brings back fond memories. In the 1990 World Solar Challenge (dominated by the world's major automakers and not by universities as it is now) I was somewhat involved with the Tokai University team's Hamazero entry...didn't make it to Adelaide in time for the official race cut-off point, but they still made it there eventually.
Interesting to see that average winning speeds are much the same now as they were then. And that automaker money (if such a thing still exists) has also disappeared from the race. I guess they got scared that they could actually make vehicles that run for nothing....

Last time I checked Renault was not is the oil business...

But it's usually more comforting to think that a secret hand kills all the electric or water powered cars rather than to realise that we have still no fooking clue on how to make that stuff works flawlessly...
