Hanezawa Garden Being Torn Down

Postby Mulboyne » Sun Oct 23, 2011 7:01 pm

[YT]jpqvlJu7QX4[/YT]

Tokyo residents on this board may have had the pleasure of visiting Hanezawa Garden. An old Taisho era property just off Nisseki Dori in Shibuya, it was turned into a restaurant and bar complex, mainly known for its beautiful beer garden. The place closed down in 2005, and Mitsubishi Estate announced plans to build an apartment block on the site. Local residents were outraged and fought to have it preserved. According to the news report above, however, the builders went in last week to start tearing it down.

Another cunning plan to turn beauty into the beast. That being said it is private property and they have the right to do what they want with it. Whether yet another 'mansion' will be a money spinner or not is another story.
There is a similar place in Ebisu where I used to do weddings. It's primarily an upscale restaurant.

I hope there's some room for some shops.

I'd like a Beams, United Arrows, Afternoon Tea, and maybe one or two French style cafes.

As much as I like Doutor, the size of most of them means you get your drink and a shower of nasty salaryman incense.

Ask for the drink without ice:
You got 1/3rd of a glass (unlike McDo where it's always served full ice or no ice)

Ask for a food:
You get something that would let a toddler still hungry...

Ask for the price:
Hey I could get me a leather seat opshiun on me new ride for that muney...

And usually... not even good...

I'd take a McDo over these anytime...

Whoops! Point of interest spotted!

Wrong thread, but perhaps you could expand on this ... somewhere?

We could start a ""New Ride" thread, but Greji would just fill it with pictures of livestock.

PM is cool.

Again shooting from your ass?
All points you mention are bullshit and invented just to make a Japanese product look bad.

No, he's right. Doutor is a holdover from the days before the coffee boom hit Japan (which, like it or not, was thanks in large part to Starbucks), when 'coffee shop' meant 'place to meet someone while decorative cups of brown water were placed on the table for 800 yen each.' A few of them tried to do a quality job of it, but there was no incentive from the public for good, high-quality, low-cost coffee, and market share went to the shops that focused on decor instead. There's one next to my office, filled with Showa-era furniture and still selling micro-servings of stale brew with a side of toast for 1,500 yen.

Doutor's main draw nowadays is that they allow smoking inside, which has dropped the quality of the place even further. There are plenty of Japanese-run shops, big chains even, that moved with the times and now serve decent-sized cups of fresh coffee at a reasonable price, so this isn't a case of just bashing Japanese products. Doutor is still staying in business, so they're obviously providing something that people want, but that something sure ain't good coffee.
I have a blog. Last update: August 18, 2013.

This was my original point. When grabbing a cup of coffee means coming out of there smelling like an ashtray, no thank you.

You're exactly right. It was year's going to meetings in those "coffee" shops and slurping down a thimble full of expresso before I finally figured that out! Good Post!

C'mon Greji, it's time for you to switch to denki-tobacco or just a straight IV nicotine drip.

As a non-smoker and non-coffee drinker, I'm rather partial to Doutour. The Milano Sando A with toast on the side is a good deal. Doutour fills a market gap. Starbuck's food is really lousy. McD is just too unhealthy.

No need. I'm going for one of those cool hookups from Matrix, where they just plug you in through the back of the neck. It would work great for nicotine and alcohol, but I'm trying to work out the where's and how's to get my johnson wet while I'm on hook up....

I do. I go there for two reasons: 1) I find it cheap and they have free cold water 2) I feel like smoking but I don't want to light a cigarette.
Seriously, I find their stuff pretty good for the price. It's cheap, available everywhere and very consistent. It's not a fancy shmancy cafe but when you want a quick snack it's got the right formula.
