Onishi went to Naples two years ago to learn the art of pizza making and now works at a pizzeria on Ischia Island, about 30 km southwest of Naples.

Let's hope he returns and teaches the locals a thing or two.

Haven't dared try the dreaded Japanese variety of pizza, but I have walked past a few pizza joints. First time I've ever encountered pizza which stinks. You can leave a gaijin pizza in the fridge for a couple of weeks and it'll still smell OK. Japanese pizza simply smells nasty.

I had some pizza last night at a french restaurant. Not too shabby, but definitely not a Chicago deep dish either.

One pizza I really enjoy is the bacon, potato, corn, mayonnaise. And I like the thin crust of Japanese pizza occassionally.

Great pic. Yo, Flock of Seagulls, know why we're here?

The owners of the original "Kewpie" design sued the maker of Kewpie poodle poop for its unlicensed use of the Kewpie name and fucked-up baby image. The Japanese company claimed _it's_ baby is completely unrelated to the original Kewpie. Oh well, the karmic wheel is turning and now theJapanese IPR bandits and getting anal-probed by the Chinese.

That's not "Japanese pizza." That's proper Italian pizza made by a Japanese guy under the tutelage of an Italian pizza maker.

The day Japanese pizza becomes the "best in the world" is the day hell freezes over. You can't beat real Italian pizza, and I can't eat any other kind of pizza after living in Italy.

What about fruit flavors and mayo in the same package? At the store today I saw Strawberry-mayo, Banana-mayo and Kiwi-mayo.

When have you ever been about to put mayo on something and said, "You know, this'd be a lot better if it had some fruity goodness in it?!?!" 8O

It's very ironic, North American Domino's Pizza sucks! However, in Japan, their Domino's Pizzas RULE! Asia, that is very new to American styles of food such as pizza, fast foods etc. can make better pizza then American chain stores.
Check out what I think you gaijins should be doing when you get to Japan at http://www.tokyoessentials.com ! Cum on, DO IT, I know you want to...

Tried it. Didn't like it. Too wet (soggy) and too sour (because of the think tomato sauce) for my taste. Maybe I didn't go to the right place but there are so many nice places to eat in Chicago that pizza doesn't come to mind when I go there.

I do not agree with those who disagree with me...!

Postby Shibuya Me » Sat Oct 04, 2003 12:00 pm

There is a tactic in politics....

And for that matter, in family life as well. It goes like this. If a person brings up a point that reflects a negative light on somone, somthing, some issue...then it is normal and natural for others to say: Well, the other person, country, company are just as bad or even worse.....

Point in case: When my mother would say..." Shibuya Me! Why did you eat the last cookie before dinner?"

I would say to my mummy: " Welp! I only took one cookie. But Shibuya You ( my brother ) took three cookies.

Now what this does is take the issue off of me and puts in onto someone else.

It is a tactic. One a lot of you employ here.

I brough up the stupid ass Japanese police. All of you said:

" Welp! America is not much better!"

You are all just a bunch of uneducated fools if this is your tactic.

I thought all of you people were a bit more....smarter than to play " My brother took more cookies than me"

I laugh at your lack of understanding.

I do not mean to put you down. And I am sorry that I did. I just need to know that most people talking about this topic are just....well.....one sided.

I weap for you and all who voted for Arnold Schartenegger! Now that is a big joke! I like him as an actor...but to lead the people?

Say it with me...

" Shibuya me..you are so right! "

Viva l'Italia!

Postby jinguman » Mon Oct 13, 2003 1:42 pm

Its more likely that he simply bribed the judges. After all, Italians are so confident about their pizza skills this guy was an easy mark for a few hundred euros. Everyone knows Japanese have decent vicarious skills (aka karaoke) but when it comes to the essence and passion of the real thing ---- well, its like me pretending to be a ramen chef in LA... Damn -- I did find myself adding corn to my fried potatoes - but so far I've witheld the urge to slather mayo!

Kyodo via Yahoo: Champion chef to spread Naples pizza culture from Omotesando Hills
Makoto Onishi, the winner of the title of best pizza maker at the annual Naples pizza festival in 2003, busied himself kneading dough and topping pizzas with tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese before welcoming hundreds of pizza lovers at Omotesando Hills, Tokyo's newly-born commercial-residential complex which opened last Saturday. About 71,000 visitors flooded to the complex on its grand opening day and many shops were jammed with people. The Italian restaurant "Trattoria & Pizzeria Zazza" on the third floor of the complex, where 30-year-old Onishi works was no exception. Many pizza aficionados were lined up in front of the pizzeria waiting to have a bite of the high-profile Onishi's freshly hand-made pizza...more...

Onishi used to work at the Pizza Salvatore Cuomo in Shirogane.

*Bump*

He's done it again!

Japanese takes pizza-making prize

Image

ANSA.it wrote:
Naples, September 14 - A Japanese pizza-maker beat the best of Naples to claim the title of world's top pizzaiolo for the second time in three years .

Makoto Onishi, 31, a master chef who learned the art of true pizza on the island of Ischia in the Bay of Naples, outperformed pizzaioli from 24 pizzerias - most of them here in the home of pizza .

In a three-hour tasting at Naples' annual Pizzafest, a jury composed of experts and journalists judged Onishi's work to be the perfect incarnation of "real Neapolitan pizza." Onishi brings a touch of Zen to the art of pizza-making. "To make a good pizza, the chef must be free of stress," he explains .

The young man from Japan came to Italy in 2002, looking for a job in a pizza restaurant .

He says fate took him to the Da Gaetano pizzeria on Ischia, without knowing he would meet his master there .

"I arrived at Naples station and a guy who turned out to be a doctor gave me three euros, saying 'get yourself some pizza.' He must have thought I was some kind of bum" .

"Then I ran into him again and I asked him where I could learn how to make a good pizza. He told me, 'Head for Ischia'" .

Onishi proved to be a fast learner. Under Gaetano Fazio's tutelage, he quickly outgrew the homegrown talent at Ischia's famous eatery, which put him up for the 2003 Pizzafest contest .

To widespread amazement, he won .

Onishi became a Japanese media celebrity and was snapped up by a popular Neapolitan pizzeria in Tokyo, run by Naples native Salvatore Cuomo .

"He's a true artist, and as hard-working and dedicated as the day I hired him," Cuomo says .

His teacher Fazio says: "Onishi is a great lad. He's just as humble as the day he knocked on my door". In the Pizzafest competition, contestants are free to be inventive with their creations as long as they stick to the traditional ingredients .

This year's winner can flaunt the title of Neapolitan Pizzaiolo 2006 and the recipe for his award-winning creation will be reproduced in other pizzarias under the name Pizzafest 2006 .

Pizza-makers and lovers from all over the world, including Neapolitans who have rolled dough into big money in the United States, Australia and Japan, have turned up for the annual festival .

Each year, Pizzafest turns out hundreds of pizzas made by pizzaioli from all over the world .

The only qualification is that they must comply with guidelines laid down by the city's Real Neapolitan Pizza Association.
