Third party insurance

Postby GomiGirl » Sun Oct 02, 2011 11:00 pm

Hubby just a new job and he plans to ride his bike to and from each day. The new company are wanting proof that he has third party insurance. First time a company has asked for anything like this as he has ridden to work at each job. The only difference is that this is an American style company so they are probably wanting to cover their own butts. If he wanted to ride a motorbike, the requirements are much tougher.

Anyway, any recommendations on where to find such insurance? It is:
3rd party general liability insurance coverage. \100 million or above.

Often insurance to cover injuries caused to others by your cycling carelessness is included in insurance for your house and contents (strange I know) or your car.

Bicycles are not included in Driver's Insurance (for those who do not own a car) and incidentally pandas should always wear a helmet when riding a moped, even if the moped belongs to somebody else.

Edited to add that you can add this to Driver's Insurance so this may be your cheapest option if you do not have other insurance or if your house and contents insurance does not include this... although I just looked at the premiums: Driver's Insurance is not cheap. The add on is a mere 1200 Yen though...

I am not in any way advocating that you choose Sompo Japan over any of the other insurance companies, I just know that they had some very wide ranging add ons to their car insurance so I searched their site first. Back in the days when all insurance companies colluded on premiums and cover I was with them for my car, but my, it is a different world now and there are other options.

And quite universal... same wuz in France... but was not available separately... so if you live in a family property for which you don't have to pay insurance you're fooked...

In the morning news, they indicated that 7-11 stores in Japan now offer bicycle insurance which customers can purchase using their in-store kiosks. The policies are underwritten by Mitsui Sumitomo. Coverage is limited to those between the ages of 20 to 70.

Here are the links to 7-11:

Good find - thank you!!

He ended up with a policy from an insurance company that cost around \12,000 for 12 months that had the minimum coverage he needed.
