COKE: BEOUARE

Postby Coligny » Mon Nov 21, 2011 11:39 pm

Be careful when buying coke bottle. I just discovered that a schwweeet deal of 128 yen per bottle was in fact for 1.25 litter bottles instead of the standard 1.5.

Yeah, SantaScrooge arrived early this year at my neighborhood Coke machine in this advertising poster too.

At my train station at Denenchofu/Tamagawa, the Coke Grinch has downsized all the carbonated soft drinks from the standard 350ml (12oz) cans to the fashionable 300ml "bottle can" (and ridiculous 200-250ml can of the bad old days) while maintaining the standard 120yen price.

All you "original" gaijin will remember that before the 1990s Japanese vending machines (8oz glass bottles before 1970), only offered ridiculous 200-250ml steel cans of carbonated soft drinks.
standard 350 ml --vs-- 200ml can pre-1990s

I remember seeing those skinny cans when I went to Montreal in the 80s. Effin rip-off.

It all went down hill when the bottles gave way to cans.

Yes, but at least they helped keep a slim figure. I love watching Coke/other soda swilling and waddling gaijin in Japan (the number of obese gaijin and obese Japanese seems to be about the same - in raw numbers!)

I knew Coligny started this mofo from the awesome, awesome francego-inflected spelling of "beware." There's also a stubby-ass PET bottle of coke being vended for 120 yen. I had to buy one to determine whether it had more or less of the evil fluid than the typical 355ml can. It's less: 300ml.

Well, if the price / contents ratio is too high, then don't buy it. There is always a tap with running water around. (says the Dutchman)

Am I the only one who thinks Santa looks kind of menacing? Bet ya he works as a carny during the summer months.

On the bright side I have noticed a lot more 100 yen vending machines lately. The brands or drinks are sometimes less well known but when you're going for ocha, uroncha etc, there isn't much difference in taste.
