It's like asking why would anybody buy a station wagon instead of a pickup truck...

Can I just say that as a Developer for both Android and iOS, Android is a total PITA. It is buggy and the file size for apps is totally throttled forcing us to use Client Server solutions for large apps. Meaning the customer has to connect to the internet everytime they search our data.

Also, the differences between the various hardware and Android implementations are a total nightmare to manage and test for. It is a free for all with the H/W manufacturers who have little standardisation.

With iOS dev, while there are lots and lots of OS upgrades that need to be managed, the screen sizes etc are much easier to program for and it is easier to be creative with feature implementation due to the standards.

Sure they do it but how many enjoy it? Also how many of them are ALSO devs for iOS and are just jumping into Android now?

Another interested survey would be how many of them are making money on the Android market compared to the AppStore? Any monkey can put out an Android app... they are not selling like they do on the AppStore.

Not too sure about the previous conversation. My comment was just a play on the subjective nature of arguments given to or against.
In the end, as Coligny mentioned, you just have to weigh up the features in realation to your desired use.

KDDI posted a news release (J only) today indicating what is happening with EZweb mail and Facetime, etc. on the iPhone 4S.

Emoticons in e-mail with other au mobile phones, and other carrier phones will be supported by the end of 1/2012.
E-mail (@ezweb.ne.jp) reception alert will be in real time (instead of the current 15 minute interval) - supported by 3/2012.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the error I occaisionally get from iPhone users. (I'm on Docomo but sounds similar) Hit reply sometimes and there is some invalid character I have to hunt down and delete.

True but LTE (Long Term Evoluvtion) has become the de facto standard given its widespread adoption; HSPA, HSPA+, and Wimax cannot compete.

LTE is the best in class technology at the moment, by a f*cking long shot.

Since the iPhone 4 (two capacities) is still being sold, that means that iPhone sales are now broken up into eight separate listings...

The combined sales numbers for iPhone 4S, iPhone4, and iPhone 3GS for that week is probably higher than than the seven non-Apple phones in that top ten put together. Three of the Android phones in that top ten are highly promoted new releases.

That top ten is Docomo Android-heavy for a reason: Docomo has yet to work out (or announce) a deal with Apple. If Docomo was selling iPhones, the the whole top ten would be iPhones.

Yeah, I'm not surprised by this. I commute on the Chuo. Connections are really slow on my 4S (actually I thought 3 was better - I can't see what the big deal is other than 5 man yen for a higher number +s). Network speed is seriously fucked with softbank.

By the time my FT app loads I'm already getting off the train. Yotsuya area in particular is really shit.

Apple cellphones become top seller in Japan for 1st time

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Cellphones made by Apple Inc. captured the largest share of mobile phones shipments in Japan for the first time in the October-December quarter, accounting for 26.6 percent, due to the popularity of the iPhone 4S smartphone model, research firm IDC Japan said Thursday.

Fujitsu Ltd., which took over the mobile phone operations of Toshiba Corp., came second with an 18.3 percent share and Sharp Corp. ranked third with 15.7 percent.

Total shipments in Japan surged 15.2 percent from a year earlier to 10.65 million units, of which smartphones accounted for 64.7 percent.

For all of 2011, shipments climbed for the second straight year, rising 5.0 percent to 37.96 million units.

Sharp topped the shipment rankings for the year with a 20.1 percent share, maintaining the top slot for the sixth consecutive year, followed by Fujitsu-Toshiba at 18.8 percent and Apple at 14.2 percent.
