Kyoto crowned best Asian city in U.S. magazine poll

Image

NEW YORK (Kyodo) -- Kyoto has been crowned the best Asian city for the first time by readers, the U.S. magazine Conde Nast Traveler said Tuesday.

The western Japanese city was followed by Bangkok and Hong Kong at second and third respectively, while Tokyo came seventh, it said. Charleston in South Carolina ranked first among U.S. cities and Florence in Italy took the top spot for Europe, it said.

Welcoming the outcome for Kyoto, the New York office of the Japan National Tourism Organization said in a statement, "This accomplishment proves the time-honored cultural richness and the city's efforts to maintain the beauty of the cityscape and sustain the culture into the 21st century."

Kyoto has been the highest ranked Japanese city and in the top 10 among Asian cities for six consecutive years. It was the second highest ranked Asian city in 2010.

In the survey begun in 1988, readers cast their ballot in various categories, including cities, islands, hotels and resorts for different regions. A record number of readers -- about 29,000 -- took part in this year's poll, according to the magazine.

Among the best foreign airlines chosen by readers, All Nippon Airways ranked ninth and Japan Airlines 10th, while Singapore Airlines earned the top spot.

That's only because Kyoto has four seasons....

Best Asian city for what? What is it best at? Or is it just the "best" like the DPRK is "Best Korea?"

To it's credit, I think I'd prefer Kyoto to Tokyo for living. Tourism? mmmm I'm a bit templed/shrined out for Kyoto.

Not so sure...

Kyoto seems to be the all the drawbacks of the countryside mated to all the drawbacks of cities (like Nagoya). At least Tokyo have some city advantages, like plenty shops, tities bars, skate rings, subways...

Nagoya is pretty much a concrete shithole with 1 big avenue but everything else pretty much sucks donkey dongs... The few parks are tents cities... cars everywhere, noise everywhere, idiots everywhere...

At least here... parks everywhere and when you can't take of the locals anymoar, just drive a bit... and the only one to give you directions will be the goats... one wrong turn and you can already hear the duelling banjos...

On paper I worked there in 2008...in reality, most of my work with the company was done remote in Tokyo and in the U.S. but I visited the office in Kyoto several times. Didn't seem thaaaaaat bad but then again, I wasn't living there.

Same here. I went to Kyoto during the Spring and Autumn seasons about 3-4 times a month for work every year from 84' to 2002'. But, that made it easy. No sightseeing, or tourist tripe, just finish up the job during the day and hit the back alley bricks for the night. Lovely city for enforcing the gaijin perception by thoroughly ruining all general cultural images by obscene behavior with painted (or unpainted) ladies, pub crawling and the basic FG piss drunk performances. Always left the shrines and temples to the goose-necking tourists...

I went to Kyoto once on my first trip to Japan in college and never had a strong desire to go back. Overall, it looks just like every other Japanese concrete shit hole.

Curious.

My old colleague went there recently and told me how very beautiful it is. I was a bit taken aback. For me it's just like any other Japanese city, but with a few nice temples scattered here and there amidst the typical mess.

I think with Kyoto people have a kind of expectation. Despite what they see, they still let the expectation fill their reality. Even though their senses might be telling them otherwise, they want to believe that it is so beautiful. They've read Memoirs of a Geisha, seen a few photos, I guess they just don't want to see all the other stuff.

Beautifull is not everything when you have to live in a place... Yellowstone is gorgeous, the grand canyon too... Now try to find a supermarket or a school there... good luck...

I think Kyoto is the best city if it's being rated by gaijin tourists who don't have to actually live there.

How about those Kyoto summers? All the heat and humidity of Osaka, without the ocean breeze!
They surely didn't base the rating on Kyoto's extensive subway system. ;)

And once you've visited all the temples and surrounding quaint old tourist spots, what is there to do?
Hang out by the river!

Yawn.

The kyoto people found a solution for their lack of supermarkets and schools. They just hunt those deers roaming around in their streets. And schools? who needs schools when you have temples!

Dodging STDs in Tawaramachi was always fun. Sort of the Kansai version of Russian roulette. You never knew which hole had a shot in it......
