electrical wiring

Postby Coligny » Fri Dec 02, 2011 5:59 pm

Another stoopid question...

But how on earth do you pass new wiring over the drywall ceiling (tatamis sized chunks) there are a lot of inspection traps. But how am i supposed to run 4 meters of wires with the trap being point A and... fuck-you being point B ?

The crawl space between the wood frame ceiling and the actual concrete seems to be around 1 meter (+) high, but I don't trust it to carry me inside. Can't even use robots since the crossmembers would make a wheeled one unusable, tracked it might work but aluminum tracks cost a fortune, and I don't feel like building a robot just for this.

(Mom wants a washlets in her loo, but since it's a floor to ceiling pressure washable loo there is not a single electric plug available... and that room is huge... 8 tatamis for 2 shitters... with matching echo...)

The "pros" do it with a collapsible fishing pole like thing (that you can actually buy at home centers).

It's actually a fairly simple solution for this type of thing. They have them in lengths from a couple of meters up to 10 meters or so. Just extend to the desired length, hook the wire on the end, and pull (gently). You could even use an actual fishing pole if you have one around that's long enough and you only have to do it once or twice.

This is actually a pretty cool article. I especially like this tool:
...an old slingshot with a cheap fishing reel mounted on it ...

I have used fishing line (never with the slingshot) on several occasions. I used to have a large reeled plumber's snake that was really good. You could run that through any length of flooring/walls, etc., and tie the wire or cable to it and just reel it in.

The people laying cables under my office flooring were using the 20-30 meter spring loaded steel tape measures that are flexible enough to take one or two turns and taping the cable to it. They'd hit rewind and drag it right through.

I still think if you light up that cat's ass, he'll run that cable all through your house, ceiling and basement and probably the neighbor's as well.

This all got me thinking how I can lay a ground wire above my ceiling of a room at the 1st floor without there being inspection holes. And from there on I have to go down the wall toward the sockets. I guess I am being stuck with making some holes myself, and somehow camouflage them?

Ahh, them Japanese houses. I sometimes think they make it difficult by purpose to do some DIY, so as to force you to call in a contractor.
