Bob Sapp, is he old news?

Postby Bucky » Wed Dec 12, 2007 10:28 am

Just wondering. . . I see that Bob Sapp is booked in an event in the Tacoma Dome in Tacoma, WA in February. I was wondering, are his 15 minutes of fame in Japan over?

He technically is still under contract to K1, but it should be expiring before too long.

He told me last year when we had hired him for a one day event (and had to pay him a ton) that he had made his money as far as his potential in Japan and during this remaining contract, would not seek fights, or further events, unless K1 called him for it.

He's pretty knowledgeable about what he has and wants to do. He's well aware that his "bull in the china shop" act, he puts on for Japan doesn't have a long shelf life. So, I wouldn't expect to see him more than maybe one more time or so, in this K1 animal capacity.

He'll probably keep getting small roles as the big strong guy in Hollywood movies too. That's a great way to supplement one's income.

Originally Sapp and Choi Hong Man spoiled K-1.
Since the two giant who have only extraordinary physical and no technique appeared, K-1 became only a show, not professional battle.

Sapp is back in Tokyo for some kind of event, but I don't know if it is K1 related or promoted.

No doubt. I nearly fell asleep while watching the tournament last week---all of the beer didn't help, but I K-1 has lost all of it's appeal IMO. What happened to the days of Sefo and Hunt just going at it for 3 rounds while beating the complete shit out of each other? No hugging, etc. That was when K-1 was hot. This is why it's not (I hate that song, BTW!).

There's nothing worse for a fighting sport than a near unbeatable champion who has boring fights. Semmy only wins because he's huge. I think the only reason he lost to Choi before was that it was the first time he fought anyone bigger than him. It just proves that size an strength can overcome skill. I don't care what your tae kwon do teacher told you.

Sapp didn't spoil K-1. He lost miserably to Hoorst, a liver or kidney shot, and to Crocop, who broke the bone around his eye.

He has a fight on the 31st. Apparently, the riff was K1 had refused to pay him what he was owed before and so he refused to fight. He left Japan and did not return until they came got him and played nice, nice and let's let bygones be bygones. It's unknown if they paid him his back money yet, but apparently they're coughing up some serious dust for this fight. Haven't seen the script, so don't know if he is to win or lose.

We have scheduled an interview with Bob Sapp in Seattle.

Neither my staff nor I have much knowledge about him other than the superficial stuff and, based on this thread, that he is probably fading in Japan.

Be that as it may, I am soliciting LEGITIMATE questions to ask him.

I think we have to stay away from the Love Hotel subject and any other embarrassing issues. so I would like to see if your FG's can suggest some questions that we can ask of him. We will be interviewing him for a Japanese language publication here in the U.S.

Any questions we use on him, I will share his responses here, if there is any interest, after we interview him.

Thanks

He went to UW, didn't he? Him being an ex-Viking, why don't you ask him how fans in the NFL compare to the fans in K1/Pride?

You can also ask him why he chose to come to Japan and what experiences he considers to be worthy of him using to later better himself (whether that's professionally or personally)?

I think Sapp claimed that when he refused to fight at the tournament in Europe, his life was threatened. I don't know if that is good ground to cover in an interview but it would interesting to find out what happened.

I think his NFL career was short, but maybe you could ask him if he wishes he could have played longer, or to imagine how his life would have been had he stayed a football player longer.

We hired Bob for a one day PR event a few years ago. He is an intelligent man and well focused on the business of making money. He realizes (his own words) that he can make a lot of money with the "Animal" imagine and K1/wrestling performances and is doing it while he is still young enough to amass an early retirement.

I got a call from him about two weeks ago and he had planned on staying in Tokyo until the end of this month. I just tried his keitai when I read your post and it's switched to voice mail, so I would assume he's on his way back to the States, if not there already.

He's a friendly guy and you won't have any trouble with the interview. I've sent you a PM on this!

I saw him in the Singapore airport on the 19th boarding a plane for Seattle. Didn't bother him; he seemed involved in a conversation with a friend..

I think he made the smart choice..

Study warns of concussions on eve of Super Bowl
http://blogs.usatoday.com/betterlife/2009/01/study-warns-of.html
.. Getting a concussion as a young adult can cause mental and physical declines more than 30 years later, according to a study in Brain, a publication of Oxford University Press.

"In light of these findings, athletes should be better informed about the cumulative and persistent effects of sports concussion on mental and physical processes so that they know about the risks associated with returning to their sport,'' said Louis De Beaumont, an author of the University of Montreal study..

Sapp losing weight after toilet seat gives
ESPN - Thursday, June 25, 2009
He's made millions in his career and can't walk across a Japanese street without getting mobbed, but there are apparently limits to the benefits of being Bob Sapp: The super heavyweight tells Larry Pepe of ProMMARadio that he's down to 320 pounds after breaking a toilet seat...more...

I was watching Conan the Barbarian (2011) and in the closing credits I realized that Bob Sapp had a decently significant part as "Ukafa." http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1452211/

Didn't you borrow that idea from those Nagoya prison guards who demonstrated some of their high pressure water hose enema skills on an inmate there?;)

They got that idea after it was used in that classic flick "Noriko does Godzilla in Nagoya Bay!"
