Forget the government, from a shareholder perspective, how have they not been testing all their foodstuffs for radiation? Especially, baby formula/foods/etc.

As usual, head in the sand, hoping trouble will not come to them instead of being proactive. Will they use worlds like "unforeseeable" and "unfortunate?"

With the trend these days they might go for "improved formula with good radioactivity good for your better health"

And increase the pricing... and give a share of the new profit to tepco...

I'd like to know how many of these contamination problems existed before the meltdown but we didn't know since no one was checking.

This was my first thought too.
Go back and check some of the stuff that was produced before 3.11.

like that will ever be looked into... they already fed school children contaminated food, now contaminated baby formula... next it will get into all the nicontine energy drinks that they dish out at pachinkos.... prolly wont get there cause the yaks will off an office full of ppl for that shit.

This is why my baby only gets my booby juice...

Bit scary though. I would have thought that ALL food manufacturers were implementing testing protocols proactively to avoid problems. Or am I naive to think they are just going ahead and hoping there is no drama and will only fix things if a problem is found?

THIS. It will be interesting to see what they find that turns out not to be related to Fukushima. Similarly, among the various "hotspots" that have been discovered, note that more than a handful of them turned out to have nothing to do with Fukushima.

But as Coligny points out, cesium is *not* one of the things that was probably lurking around before Fukushima. So I don't think we had this particular kind of contamination problem without knowing it. Other contamination, maybe.

Fortunately, this one is not health threatening anyway. But I still wouldn't intentionally pick the item with cesium in it over the non-contaminated item next to it on the shelf in the store.

I wasn't talking about this case in particular but all the hot spots (as OM mentioned), etc.

http://ex-skf.blogspot.com/2011/12/radioactive-baby-formula-msms-parade.html

You need something with 140 MBq/Kg i/e 140 000 000 Bq / kg to kill a dog.
This milk is 102 Bq /kg... half life of cesium is 30 years...

So considering a baby is as tough skinned as a dog (rabid or not).
It would need 1 372 549 Kg of milk to be ingested, fast enough for the cesium not to be partially eliminated or half lifed', nor the baby to die of old age to kill said baby dead... (that's approximately the weight of 5 Airbus A380, or Boing 747-8 for those who prefer imperial measure who fall from the sky by themselves (buy Airbus, It's French... w00t w00t, tell them you call from me, you get free keyholder and mile high club hazing during the test drive)).

So like for WD40, not lethal on the spot... but have nothing to do in baby formula...

We had a breast pump in the clinic, but I took it appart to make a winch for lifting the car when I rotate the tires...

Some lady was storing breast milk in a plastic bottle in the fridge in our office break room back in Seattle, and naturally some food pilferer drank it.
