Wow that is the second time in two days that I have been ...well not exactly ambushed, but certainly assaulted by incredibly crappy music. No doubt that was a 'Eurovision Song Contest' winner.

Let's keep it at that, that that was Chokonen's interpretation, because the other implied meaning is highly inappropriate, when referring to any nationality (including Germans).

I think Coligny already explained to WITH A PICTURE what a Dutch oven is. You probably call them something else in Dutch but in English that's a Dutch oven. When Choko posted that the first thing I thought of was a big black cast iron cooking pot, not German death camps.

Speaking of which, when is that new system coming into play? My gaijin card is up for renewal later this year.

Uh, not exactly.

According to the immigration homepage:

The maximum validity period of a re-entry permit is set at "5 years."
The maximum validity period of a re-entry permit issued after implementation of the new system (July 9th, 2012) is to be "5 years," instead of the current "3 years."

Correct. When the new system comes into play and they hand you a nice new 5 year visa, you automagically get a 5 year reentry permit as well. If you get a 3 year visa you get a 3 year reentry permit. For people on PR's and such, as long as you are not out of the country for a lengthy period you cam come and go as you please under the new system.

All in all quite nice and been a long time coming.

I just renewed mine and have to pick it up on the 31st.

i didn't see anything about the new cards. but I may just go and get one for the hell of it.

i should have bought a multiple re-entry permit and not single again... only and extra 3000 yen.

Around June 2012. I'm sure it will be mass confusion when it starts.

9 July

If I was feeling bitchy I might have said that you could have found that yourself, but I understand that it is much easier for you to log in to FG and type a question, rather than launching Google or anything.

But of course I don't need to be bitchy at all. That link was posted in the post just above yours anyway.

Uh, not exactly.

...

OK so that was a simplification you were told, but the new system will be that you are considered to have a automatic multiple re-entry permit, so long as you come back to Japan within a year. Re-entry after an absence of over a year from Japan requires an application in advance, from within Japan. That application will now last for 5 years.

Aha, so the immigration guy was sort of right (he knew that I have PR).
Good to know that those of us with PR do not have to continually renew our re-entry permits. Mine always expires and then I have to get a new one before leaving the country.

Nothing to do with permanent residency. The "entertainer" in your local Philippine Pub will get exactly the same system.

Hahaha word.

Sorta off topic but since you're planning on applying, do you know if the 5 years living in Japan for the PR has to be while you're married? ...or would someone that's lived here 5 years and then gets married to a J national be able to apply for a PR without waiting another 5 years?

OK, so after taking another look at the MOJ web site, I'm back to being somewhat confused.

On the page about the re-entry permit system being changed, it states:
Foreign nationals in possession of a valid passport and resident card (*1) who will be reentering Japan within 1 year of their departure to continue their activities in Japan (*2) will, in principle, not be required to apply for a re-entry permit. (This is called a special re-entry permit.)
Then, at the bottom of the same page:
The maximum validity period of a re-entry permit is set at "5 years."
So, if as indicated at the top of the page it says that we will "not be required to apply for a re-entry permit", then how does immigration know when this 5 year period begins and ends (if a re-entry permit has not been applied for)?
If there is no physical permit (e.g. stamp in your passport), will the 5 year period be from when the residence card is issued?
Maybe I'm missing something obvious here...

My balls are not quite big enough to say anything definite, but I think you are being confused because they are using the same terminology "reentry permit" for the different systems.

The way I read it is that you are deemed to have a right of reentry to Japan on your existing visa status without applying for anything, but that right only allows you to be out of Japan for up to a year. You only apply for a reentry permit if you are going to be away for more than a year, and that permit runs out in 5 years. So you can't return on the same visa status is you are away for 5 years. And you can only return on the same visa status if you have been away for longer than a year, if you applied for a reentry permit before you left.

Why can't I stop doing your research for you???

Marriage of 5 years, whether in or out of Japan, but in practice PR applications are only entertained if the spouse is on a 3 year visa at the time of application. This may change to 5 year visa once they are issued.

Or 10 years residence.

Or sporting prowess. Use whichever comes first.

That's how I read it as well....you only need a reentry permit if you're leaving for longer than a year and that reentry permit you will receive will only last up to 5 years. If you leave Japan for longer than 5 years, you lose your visa status.
