NHK more than doubles viewership by watching their viewers

Somehow it's like the old punchline "...in the Soviet Union, TV watches you" becomes true in Japan.

---NHK brings new ways for browsing channels and TV content intuitively and automatically with user feedback and facial recognition---
Trendpool.com | Dec 13, 2011
NHK Science Technology Research Laboratories has developed a new kind of television technology and experience where a TV presents programs or information displays adjusted to how people are viewing the screen. Though it stops short of reading our minds, it has the potential to read our faces to check how engaged we appear...more...

At the risk of sending this thread in an entirely different direction, I still don't understand why this broadcaster uses licence fees to develop hardware systems which results in Japan-only standards which ultimately supports the local manufacturers by creating a domestic-only market and discouraging foreign entry. This has never been an appropriate use of licence fees, especially as the local manufacturers have shown themselves perfectly capable of colluding and creating a galapagos market in other products all by themselves. This is a completely different issue to the one of NHK using licence fees to produce programming which is almost indistinguishable from the commercial broadcasters./rant
