Well I figure better late than never...

Was teacher in USA. Got laid off due to massive budget cuts (and was getting annoyed with the educational system in the USA). Sold my stuff and lived in Russia for a while (working without a visa but in Russia a nice bribe gets you far), backpacked around Europe visiting friends for a while and then got accepted at an international school in Japan.

Figured why the hell not and threw caution to the wind and took the job. No clue what to expect and no clue about Japan prior to getting here. Spent the first year here trying to adjust to life here and quickly realized bribing is NOT ACCEPTED here.

As you can see by my first topic here not overly impressed with Japan and still on the fence about renewing for 2 more years here or going elsewhere. I If I do stay here for 2 more years I guess I have a forum to bitch about things here. ha ha

Other than that I am laid back, 420 friendly, easy going and don't take life so damn seriously.

Never in my life have I heard someone needing a description of what 420 means. But hey, I'm from Canada, we make bongs out of hard packed snow and get fried with our sled dogs on an hourly basis. I heard that if the cops catch you with some weed in Japan they cut off your right hand and imprison you in the walls of the imperial palace.

Hello!
Been lurking for a while.
FG to a J-husband with 1 child and 1 on the way.
Moved here from US about 3.5 years ago and will probably stay here until DH job gets shipped overseas.

Lucky to have fantastic in-laws and extended family, but they live far away.

Main trial in life right now is catching up to my daughter in her kanji reading. My old brain just does not retain like it used to. But it provides comedic relief for the family when I try to write something.

Ooooh, I feel your pain.
As a "favor" to a friend, I teach junior high school science classes in English on Saturday to returnees and they always embarrassing me on kanji knowledge even though 18 years ago I have passed Kanji Kentei level 8.

Welcome.

We will give you access to the Powder Room which is a girls only space here. Not much goes on in there - it has been a bit quiet of late.

You could give Greji and me access to that while you're at it...though I don't think there will be much powdering going on in there if we're there.

Uh, Hi. I'm another self-loathing otaku with dreams of living in Japan who stumbled upon this site recently and decided to sign up. I don't really know any Japanese people or even people who speak Japanese fluently, so I figured I needed to find an online community to compensate.

I'm not gonna lie; I've only been studying Japanese for about ten months, and I don't get to actually use what I've learned very often (if at all), so you'll have to forgive me if I'm a bit slow on that front.

Anyway, I'm a young 'un fresh out of school and planning to head off to university next year in order to pursue a career in education. Ideally, I'd like to enlist for the JET program once I've finished my degree and then try to settle down in Japan, but I know it's going to be hell getting to that point. Still, I'm preparing as best I can. Get a job, save up enough, get that degree, shatter my foolish preconceptions of Japanese culture, and job's a good 'un.

I said this on http://shoryuken.com/forum/index.php?threads/the-official-japan-thread-2-0-nani.69437/page-42#post-6217546... will say the same to you...

IF you want a career in edumacation... do it in your own cuntry and don't waste your time/life here in japan. I know getting some Japanese pussy (or dick) may be a real hard on for you... but think about it SERIOUSLY and think about your future...

Love of Japanese culture and society aside, there's nothing for me in this country, and I was never one for patriotism. Plus I have personal reasons related to family, which I'd rather not talk about for obvious reasons.

And I'm certainly not planning to go there because I want to sleep with Japanese women (and I find it insulting that anyone would accuse me of being that shallow). I have a genuine and unshakeable interest in Japan as a whole, and unless I manage to finish writing that dream novel of mine, then there's nothing else I'd rather do than help build bridges between cultures, regardless of whether I can influence everyone I teach.

Call me a wide-eyed idealist if you will, but I've got a dream and a desire to help people.

None. Why, is this a forum for the misanthropic and the severely depressed or something?

I mean, I might have PTSD, but that doesn't mean I can't stay positive about life.

I have an unshakeable interest as well - have you ever seen that earthquake simulator machine they built? It shakes full sized buildings so J-engineers can manufacture perfect plastic condos resillient to their hourly quakes - anyways, here's my Idea:

I want to ride inside one of their earthquake simulators during a real earthquake - my theory is that they will cancel each other out. Also, I want to be riding a mechanical bull at the same time. Best interest evar!
