The can says happoshu. But I am not sure if a "third" beer can be happoshu as well. Can it? Happoshu is defined by malt content. I should probably dig back in this thread and see what defines the third stuff.

kinda like real cheese, eh! Aquired at great expense then served at parties, many Japanese guests insist fine quality cheeses are bad and need to be thrown out with the trash immediately.

Only after I separate the hemp seeds. ;)

Actually, I think the seeds are baked so they wouldn't have any affect.. And smoking seeds sucks anyway; gives me a headache..

I highly don't recommend smoking the shichimi as it will certainly fuck your lungs up. I learned this the very hard way. It is fun for any batsu-games though ;)

Here's the own-brand beer-like drink which 7-11 has developed together with Suntory. It will be on sale from Friday at the company's convenience stores at 123 yen a can but you'll also be able to pick up 6-packs from Ito Yokado and York Benimaru supermarkets on an early deal price of 600 yen.

88 yen will buy you a can of TOPVALU BARREAL at Aeon and group stores like Ministop. A six pack sells for 488 yen.

The company is describing it as a "new genre" beer which sounds quite sinister. Their target market is middle-aged regular drinkers which tells you as much as you need to know about how it is likely to taste.

BARLEY + REAL = BARREAL

It probably tastes like it's from the bottom of the barrel too.

Okay here is a question I have. Kinda of looking at the opposite end of the spectrum. Why are craft beer so damn expensive in Japan? They usually charge 2 to 3 times the rate of a regular beer. With craft breweries in almost anywhere else (Canada, the US, England) the mark up is typically about 10%. So my question is: Are the craft brewery hosing their customers or is there an unfavourable tax regime at work?

Japanese microbrews are cheaper in the US than they are in Japan even if you assume $1 = 100 yen. I've also noticed that they tend to be the most expensive beers at bars in Tokyo and are generally 100 - 200 yen more a bottle than European and US craft beers.

Aeon starts selling cheap beer

It should be noted the article mistakenly labels it dai-san beer, which is the 88 yen/can variety mentioned in an earlier post by Mulboyne.

I tried this stuff last night. It's better than happoshu but not great. The other thing is that if you go to Aeon to buy it, standard Japanese lagers like Asahi and Kirin are also cheaper than other places (180 yen a can) so you don't even save that much.

A six pack of Barreal is 945 yen (massive 3 yen savings!!!). Asahi or Kirin is 1080 at Aeon. I'd rather pay 135 yen more for a better beer.

Yeah, I can get Orion locally for 175 yen/can, and sometimes slightly cheaper at very large liquor stores. Worth the extra few yen for a locally brewed delicious beer.

I noticed the Barreal Lager Beer was priced at 880 a sixer on my shopping trip this evening. Under a 150 yen a can now.

Kind of low hanging fruit though. Personally, I would like someone to explain why exactly the government opts to tax beer based on it's malt content rather something more sensible like alcohol content?
