Baby Snow suits - rental/borrow/buy/steal

Postby GomiGirl » Sun Dec 18, 2011 3:00 pm

Planning a trip to the snow in the new year and we are taking our 14 month old. We want to allow him to play in the snow but I don't want to fork out for a snow suit he will only wear for 3 days.

Do ski rental places rent snow suits around size 80/90?

Or does somebody here have one I can borrow or buy second hand?

Or other suggestions?

I have a whole kit you can have for 1000 yen, snow boots included. PM me if you're interested. I live in Ebisu!

^^ His sounds like a great deal, but if that doesn't work out just layer the heck out of the kid with what you have. We don't get snow but it does get very cold for our 4 year old when we go up into the mountains. He's got a cheap uniqlo heat-tech under-layer, some kind of synthetic or micro-fleece shirt, a wool/mostly wool or fleece sweater, and then a big coat or sometimes even two coats a thinner fleece one under his fluffy one. For the pants we found great ones this year which are fleece lined from uniqlo. Gloves are fleece, and in snow you probably want a synthetic layer over those. Hat, fleece or wool.

You can maybe sense a trend but you're only major concern really is to avoid cotton, especially in the lower layers. If that gets wet from the snow he's gonna be cold and it will take hours to dry out and there is a big chance he'll catch a cold. Wool is the best for a variety of reasons, but synthetics aren't bad either usually, the main thing is they dry out quickly and generally keep you warm even while wet (wool always, synthetics sometimes.)

Also he's always got a cheap but decent raincoat at the bottom of his pack, would definitely bring one along in the snow too. Also socks. Get wool if you can but non-itchy ones are too expensive so we just carry a couple extra pairs in case the ones he wears get wet.

Anyway you can do it on the cheap quite easily. When he stops growing he can get the North Face gear or whatever lol.

Coming from someone who is in the ice rink year round, any kind of higher quality wool is what i would go with. I have many of UNIQLO's HeatTech long sleeves and pants and it's OK but not nearly as warm as wool. For everyday use, I have a ton of Smartwool products and for hockey, I use Swiftwick brand merino wool socks. (bit sturdier than most of the Smartwool and they're also compression socks) The difference between wool and cotton is night and day...you will never go back to cotton again. (and your wallet/purse will hate you for it...but you'll be much more comfortable and warm)

Yes definitely agree, I am slowly changing anything I can for myself over to merino wool. In the long run it is supposed to end up cheaper as it won't stink and you don't need to wash it as often. Much too expensive for the kid though who will only wear it a year or two at most, so for him we mostly get fleece.

Btw side note, costco has adult size 70% merino wool socks in a 4 pair pack for like \1000 right now. They don't seem the same quality as my smartwool and mont bell socks but you can't beat that price.

Good looking out...will have to check those out. I already bought their Merino version of HeatTech shirt/pants and it is sooo much warmer than HeatTech!!

You're going to your usually place right? Ring 'em up. That's quick and the easiest to answer that part of your question...

Have fun and if I get any reports of you using the Gominator for a snow board, I will come looking for you....
