Earthquake! M4 no M5.5 hits Tokyo while typhoon approaches

Postby Taro Toporific » Sat Sep 20, 2003 12:58 pm

While the typhoon is coming Mother Nature figured we need an M4 earthquake too.

12:54 Ibaraki epicenter ... news still breaking

Kyodo says all Tokyo 23 wards report seismic intensity 4 (wacko Japan-only scale) and and no worry of tsunami. No injuries...Never mind.

Yes, it did feel close. Your house is less than 2 km from mine and it felt rather "significant."

Quake Hits Tokyo Area, at Least 7 Hurt

Saturday September 20, 1:13 PM / AP
http://asia.news.yahoo.com/030920/ap/d7tlu3qg0.html

A strong earthquake rocked the Tokyo area Saturday afternoon, injuring at least seven people and causing minor damage to some buildings.

The quake, which had a preliminary magnitude of 5.5 and was centered just east of Tokyo, was strong enough to sway buildings in the capital. Though damage appeared to be light, Japan's Kyodo news service reported a temple wall collapsed, injuring seven people.

Japan's public broadcaster, NHK, had initially warned that the quake could cause tsunami, potentially dangerous ocean waves caused by seismic activity. But Japan's Central Meteorological Agency quickly announced that was unlikely.

According to the meteorological agency, the epicenter of the quake was in the province of Chiba, which lies on Tokyo's eastern border, at a depth of about 50 miles.

The shaking lasted about 30 seconds in Tokyo.

It's good that you guys in Tokyo are in touch with each other and know where each other live for situations like this. This might sound stupid, but have you got plans about what to do in a major disaster? I guess you do right?

It would be really important for you Tokyo FGs to look out for each other in a disaster situation, because if there is chaos, who else will checking up on everyone's safety? Another FG who knows of you might be the only one looking for you in a 'doomsday' type earthquake/North Korean nuke situation. You could save each other's lives in a situation of chaos with emergency services overwhelmed and the hospitals overflowing, no electricity, water etc.

Looking for gaijin might be rather low on the priority list of 'things to do' for the authorities/neighbourhood in general. Just look at the example of how the burakumin areas were ignored for days after the Kobe earthquake.

Not to be too down on the whole thing, but you are all smart people and it would be good to have contingency plans.

Japanese intensity scale vs Richter scale

Japanese intensity scale vs Richter scale

Strong earthquake hits Tokyo
(Mainichi Shimbun, Japan, Sept. 20, 2003)
The temblor that struck at 12:54 p.m. registered 4 on the 7-point Japanese intensity scale in southern Ibaraki Prefecture, southern Tochigi Prefecture, southern Saitama Prefecture, Chiba Prefecture, Tokyo's 23 wards and eastern Kanagawa Prefecture....

The focus of the earthquake that is estimated at 5.5 on the open-ended Richter scale was located about 80 kilometers below the sea bottom off Chiba Prefecture, the Meteorological Agency said.

Maybe I've got foxmulder xfiles syndrome, but I think this science guy deserves more credit than he's getting. sheesh, even if he was a couple of days off, this is still pretty impressive. I'm think this is the guy to listen to when you're waiting to see when the Big One comes.

I find it funny that I never went through an earthquake while I lived in California. I was never in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I did ride out hurricane Andrew in 1992. I lived in the worst hit area of Miami. All the homes in my area where gone. My room was the only one not damaged other than the water. It took the 6 of us to try and hold the door closed. I dont know how we did it with 150 MPH winds. It was a big mess after that.

Just the other day I was in Loft and saw they had an area devoted to earthquake disaster kits. Lots of cool survival tools. I was like: that's a good idea. Maybe I'll come back later and purchase some of these things. Then the quake on Saturday and I was pissed at myself for not buying that kit. This is definitely on my to-do list this week.

The cheapest earthquake kit often can be purchased from your Ward Office at BELOW WHOLESALE cost. It comes all self-contained with even a nifty silver KKK hat that's firestorm proof in case of the next American carpet bombing.
