The white guy bit was cute. Didn't bother me. But they sure ripped the Chinese a new asshole. Still, it's not any different to the way we talked about the Japanese 30 years ago. In those days it was the Japanese who were known for copying everything.

Yeah, interesting.

By the way, Debito is said to no longer be either working or living in Japan. Quit his job back in the spring. Been living in Canada since.

What I admire about Debito is that he has enough self respect to be offended.

He must be still living and working in Japan then if it is.

See, here's the thing: there doesn't exist any sort of biconditional proposition that Debito can write about Japan if and only if he's living in Japan. As chokonen wrote, his site is still up and he's still writing columns.

Heh - those perapera hakujin are fuckin' morons! And yeah, the Japanese haaaate it when you point out their reverse-engineer-and-copy-the-shit-out-of-everything origins (actually, they've never stopped).

-catone
-at least the shinajin aren't so self-loathing that they won't even give their cars names using their own writing system. When was the last time you saw a Japanese car with non-Roman letters on it?

But to continue writing that stuff when he's not even living here anymore (if true) suggests that the size of the "chip on his shoulder" or the "hard-on for perceived victimhood from Japan" is simply quite staggering.

Most people move on, but then I suppose he's made a business out of this line of work.

I'm no Debito fan but why does one have to live in Japan to maintain an interest in what's going on here? Like him or not Debito has paid his dues and is a Japanese national.

Yea, but for some people (usually found on digg.com or sankakukomplex) argument like "he's not EVEN living there" are total thread winnars...

Maintaining an interest is one thing, but claiming to be an authority on the culture kind of requires one to actually be in regular contact with it.

Especially since Japan has such a speedy turnover of trends. People claim change is glacial here, in some ways I guess it is, but some things come out of apparently nowhere. Who would have thought Korean boy bands would be such a hit for example.

While I agree with what you're saying, have you seen the fans of the Korean boy bands?

The aliens...err Japanese abducted him and put a GPS implant in him. Amazing the detail in which they can track him.

You implied here that he must still be in Japan because...
chokonen888 wrote:His website is still up and he's still writing columns...

I agree. If his "website is still up and he's still writing columns" then he must still be in Japan.

Why then are some people saying that he is in Canada?

He couldn't have a website up and still be writing columns if he wasn't in Japan. Doesn't make any sense. I agree with your first post.

It's called the Internets. Amazing invention. Too bad it doesn't come with a yobbo filter, 'cause then I wouldn't have to manually delete every post you write.
