All it does is serve as a catalyst for anarchy and promotes American style bickering and distrust of the government through foreign media sources. The effects of a society over consumed with energy that demands more for less. Like a bunch of spoiled children. These mothers are clearly overreacting when bringing geiger counters to the market place to measure radiation. It's really sickening when I read stuff like this. Like the government wants to knowingly sell contaminate food to its own people.

Other governments have done it before, and this government has been caught doing surprisingly similar things. I think a healthy dose of skepticism is not unreasonable.

On the other hand, I suspect this group has spent huge amounts of time organizing and purchasing the geiger counters, and precious little time studying radiation and its health effects. It's very possible that they, like huge numbers of people on the Internet, end up misinterpreting the readings and sending out alarming messages about things that are not meaningful health risks. There are good reasons geiger counters are not really sold as consumer devices.

And that's the thing. Radiation is natural, yet these ignorant Japanese don't understand that. It's as natural as the carbon dioxide that's released from Fujii-san. Radiation has always been in food, and in every other thing.

These groups are all bad and the poor Japanese are being duped into feeling like they're being betrayed by the government BECAUSE of American style media.

that's a fascinating world of strawmans you are living in... the usual 'people are too dumb to use a fucking meter' and 'people will panic' plus the traditionnal 'not a health risk anyway' ready to go...

First, let's cut the bullshit... GM counters are consumer device. They are sold on 4m4z0n.com, rakuten and often bundled with "radioactivity measure for dummies" books...

Meters report values... they have alarms... who rings at the value you ask them to... factory setting being of a value quite standard... so once you read the first line of the manual talking aboot the normal level to expect in a city. You see at home this expected value... with little variation coming from your local farmer market... if the gizmo starts beeping there is at least case for question. But after few weeks of use I see much more possibilities of under reading than over reading. Only once i had the alarm ring, in front of my computer still not sure who farted... maybe the tritium from an old watch but wikipedia (the god with answers) told me the ridiculously low beta decay would need much more expensive equipement to be measured... So instead of your holier than thou mantra... why dont you read the manual of one of those device to realise that neither rocket science nor black magic are involved, your are quickly becoming an embarrassment since what was looking like humility from you (or patronizing) turn out to be either ignorance or proof of an understanding of science and the teaching of science as low as could have existed in the middle age. Hope they don't burn witches anymore in your village because if not everytime someone flips a switch to turn of the light, he's going to be the next on the cremation list...

as for the panic part... after all the shit from dangerously radioactive cars to tea, mandatory school lunch and much more that goes without anybody complaining while in any other country politicians would have been at best arrested for tampering with food and public safety but more certainly being beheaded... I think we can clearly say : STFU Forrest... those people wouldn't know how to panic even if they wanted to...

I don't think you quite understand what a "straw man argument" is. Here would be an example:

Person 1: Exposure to one gazillionth of a microsievert of radiation will not make you die from cancer.

Person 2: Person #1 is defending the evil Tepco executives!

You may disagree with my prediction that many people are not going to do their homework on health effects of radiation, and they will make up their own version of science. That doesn't make it a straw man argument.

Maybe not a strawman per se... but baselessly assuming a lot in a way fitting your point of view...
