Relive New Years

Postby canman » Wed Jan 04, 2012 9:34 am

For the next few days on crappy Japanese TV we will get to relive all of the low lights of the New Years TV programming. That, and the exodus of all the talents to Hawaii! Not sure why they always show this crap, but it has become an annual event for morning wide shows.
On a side note, I thought for sure that this year the ridiculous New Years shows that are always shown, would try to tame, the amount of food, and money they were throwing away in respect to the survivors of the earthquake and tsunami, but no, they did the same as usual, only Kohaku seemed to have any kind of respect for the people of Tohoku.

New Years in Japan always sucks no matter how you look at it. I hate being stuck here on New Years Eve.

I too pretty much hate New Year's here (chiefly because I really hate having to sit in front of Japanese TV in a cold, and we're talking sub-zero, house in the inaka), and normally flee the country at the nearest opportunity to avoid it.

This year I stayed, and stayed in Tokyo too. It wasn't that bad. I watched streamed movies and TV from torrent sites, and even whilst surrounded by Japanese TV I was protected by my headphones.

I found that there is a way to survive it.

Had a pretty decent nenmatsu-nenshi. Tequila-soaked countdown house party that ended just before the Jan. 1st earthquake, trip down to Kawasaki for hatsumode and supporting the yakuza street vendors, and one day of peace and quiet at home catching up on (non-Japanese) TV shows. If I had to sit around with relatives (of which I have none), watching J-TV, I suppose that I'd be wishing for evisceration, also.

All you have to do to survive Japanese TV is to boycott any show with trannies, kids, or J-pop thingies and you'll be fine. Mind you those limitations there almost nothing left on TV.

dreamy Peach, you hit the nail on the head! I have no desire to watch this junk, and thanks to my slingbox, have almost avoided all of the stuff, but when you have two 20 something aged kids, who do seem to enjoy some of this stuff, invariably it is on and you can't avert your eyes all the time.
Dimwit, you forgot to mention Ekiden as another source of boring TV watching. I understand that some people record this and watch it later when they can really concentrate on the action? WTH, unless you belong to the company or school, what is the great interest?

That new year Hakone ekiden is only slightly more interesting than watching the wallpaper peel while eating your osechi ryori. And it goes on for two days! But it has been going on for decades and has become a tradition that some people can't seem to do without. The wife insists on watching it, so we have it on every year, but thus far I've never been spurred to jump out of my chair and root for any particular team. It's just sort of a background to the new year's *ahem* festivities. Boring.

New Year's holiday tv programming is like thermonuclear war. The only winning move is not to play [it].

Look, at least I admire the people doing something that requires talent. But ekiden viewing rates up there with Shogi as being untelevisable. Why any network ot her than NHK would cover it is a total mystery to me.

I think he means that although he can congratulate the runners for their athletic ability, watching the entire drawn out process over a period of two days is not high on his "entertainment value" list. I agree. It's not exactly a spectator sport. Shogi is just thrown in as an example of a game that requires skill, but is painfully boring to watch.

All my plans fell through on New Years Eve so I ended up dragging the lemur along with me to my neighbor's house where my younger brother and all his friends had gathered. The neighbor's family is quite comedic and whipped out some coffee flavored tequila for the lemur. For someone who has never drank before, she went from shy/quiet to the life of the party in 4 shots. (and only 15 mins) She was begging for more alcohol but not wanting her to go Fukushima on me later on, I forced her to pace herself. By the end of the party she was half asleep but without any signs of potential puke fountain, I carried her back home. She was probably more entertaining than anything on J-TV....as I walked out the door with her slung over my shoulder, she was singing "Who ret za doguzuout? hoo hoo hoo! Who ret zacatsu out?! Nyan! Nyan! Nyan!" I didn't bring my camera but from what I heard, there are some pretty interesting pics from that night.

That "dame dame dame" annoys the hell out of me, as the devil of doubt appears on my shoulder and starts whispering in my ear that she really means "NO!" and if I continue with with things, I'm going to jail. The "dame" trilogy devil disappears when she raises her hips to assist in undergarmet removal, but, man....kinda messes with my head. I mean, she let me tie her up with belts and ropes and now she's saying "dame"?
