New Yamanote Line Station to Open Next Year

Postby Mulboyne » Wed Jan 04, 2012 5:43 pm

[floatr]Image[/floatr]The Yomiuri reports (Japanese) that construction will start on a new Yamanote Line station between Shinagawa and Tamachi, currently the longest stretch between stops. The last to be added on the circuit was Nishi Nippori in 1971. The new station, which has not yet been named, is part of an area undergoing redevelopment, designated for special tax and immigration status. The new office blocks are expected to be attractive to international companies, with good access to Haneda airport and the Tokaido shinkansen.

How could a small area of Tokyo have special immigration status? Is it going to be some kind of special economic zone like they have in China or something?

Well that puts the new station squarely in the neighborhood of Sengakuji (which already has an Asakausa line subway station). This neighborhood is #2 on my ranking of "most boring neighborhoods near a train station in Minato-ku", surpassed only by its neighbor, Takanawadai eki.

I guess this is good news for those who like to retrace the steps of the 47 ronin annually (including you FGs who dress up and parade down there, and I *am* going to catch you on camera someday to post in the Random Gaijin thread).

I am guessing they are going to call the station Sengakuji or Takanawa, which is the official address in the area.

Funnily enough, I recently had a sudden urge to know where in Tokyo, inside the Yamanote Line loop, is furthest from any railway or subway station. I hadn't pored over a map to work it out but Captain Japan and I both wondered, even before this announcement, if it might be somewhere in the area between Takanawadai/Shinagawa stations and Tamachi/Mita stations.

As it turns out, others have asked an identical question on the Japanese web. The answer seems to be Higashi 4-9 in Shibuya-ku, said to be 920m from a station. The sheer size of the Imperial Palace also means that the centre is 800m from a station.

There's probably an argument to be had about whether a station entrance should be regarded as the station itself. There are some which seem to be a good few hundred yards from the nearest ticket gates. If you went further and included the distance to an actual platform then Oedo line stations would start to come into their own for inconvenience.

The Oedo line continues downwards and downwards (past Hades) at many stations...tried to get it renamed the "Jigoku-sen", but the locals would only offer a slight chuckle.

OM, you just ruined my whole fucking day. I somehow survived late December and the first couple of days of January of being drowned in Oishi and the undercover samurai, which played opposite (on any channel) of the run-up for the kohaku, the kohaku, the analysis of the kohaku, and the post kohaku shows.

This year they showed every version of 47 thugs in the history of movies and television to date, plus they added a couple newly produced versions for this year.

Hey, Dreamy Peach, no hotlinking allowed. If you want to post an image, upload it to FG first.

Unlike Mom who will soon reach the point were I have to ask her to sign a paper were she promise not to hack the gibson from the home network but go to a cyber cafe first; dad is not exactly interested in the web capacity of his IPhone. And since he's an obgyn... it's not with porn that I will catch his attention... But judging by the number of times where he rings me for no purpose he seems to enjoy quite much to show it of...

Can see the scene from here... (picture this in japango):

Sorry Grej. Nowadays I can't quite predict what kind of material will give you a raging erection. I was just trying to help out and thought samurai costumes might do the trick, but looks like I failed again.
