Sanjo....

Postby hanasims » Mon Sep 22, 2003 10:42 am

Has anyone been or lived in Niigata? Or even better, Sanjo. I am moving there with my girlfriend in August, and I was wondering what it is like? I am probably going to be the only Gaijin in that area. Are the stares the problem or are you treated badly? Please can you help me learn what to expect from this move? I appreciate your help as always.

YIKES! You're going to "Snowcountry"!
(Snowcountry is of course the novel by Japan's sole Nobel Prize winner for literature, Yasunari Kawabata, set in Niigata .)

Check out the basics at MyMiigata.com
The city's site www.city.sanjo.niigata.jp
http://www.pref.niigata.jp/en/index2.html

Remember, living in the countryside can have it's advantages on the personal level. For one thing, visas are easier since they are NOT afraid of being over-run by aliens and are suffering from severe depopulation. Jobs are fewer but DIY jobs and consulting can be easier. since there is less-or-no competition.

Every time I'm out on the farm for more than a week, local people start bringing me their broken software/laptops, English resumes, biz letters, English lessons, legal problems in the States, GM vans for troubleshooting, sick livestock, welding ....damn I could NEVER retire and take it easy out on the farm.

Kenzaburo Oe, author of A Personal Matter is also a Nobel laureate.

Here's a link to all the winners in the 20th century: http://drs.yahoo.com/S=2766679/K=japan+nobel+literature/v=2/SID=w/l=WS1/R=20/H=0/*-http://www.hycyber.com/CLASS/nobel.html

I'm a fan of ol' Kenny. Quite literally some of the most interesting stories I've read. Most of his stories are written about mental retardation or autism, probably because his son is autistic.

I like "nip the buds shoot the kids" and "An Echo of Heaven". My wife says his writtings are too difficult to understand for comman Japanese. Well the translated books are a snap to read and quite interesting.

The woman who translated Oe's "A Personal Matter" was my J-literature teacher in college. He won the Nobel during the semester I was in her class. She was never there during office hours--too busy talking to the press.

I guess being a jack-of-all-trades has its downside. Sick livestock and welding? Where's the connection?

Stock and trade of any cowboy is to tend his beasts and his pickup.*

*(If you break a plow, you don't drive 20 miles into town to get it welded. Most folks on the ranch can weld and do rough machining. Likewise, Japanese cannot stomach field surgery, but they know I can do a cesarean on cows, sows, and hell a large girl if I had to.)
