Hiroshima Prison sans scaffolding, but with a really groovy mural

Manhunt underway after inmate escapes from Hiroshima prison
HIROSHIMA —
Police in Hiroshima on Wednesday launched a manhunt for a Chinese man serving 23 years for attempted murder after he escaped from a prison in a residential area in Naka Ward.

According to police, the prisoner—Li Guolin, 40—exercised each morning at 10 with a group of prisoners. Prison guards noticed him missing at 10:40 a.m., Fuji TV reported.

Security camera footage showed a man dressed in white prison garb climbing over the 4.5-meter-high wall at 10:30 a.m. The walls were under repair and scaffolding had been put up inside and outside the perimeter, Fuji TV reported. The walls are normally electrified but had been turned off so as not to endanger workers, prison officials said.

The prison is surrounded by condos and there are several schools in the area. Children were sent home from a nearby school as soon as news of the manhunt broke.

From here

Gawd. Where does one start with this story? How not to repair prison walls, how not to locate a prison.

I'm just glad he was in jail for attempted murder and not actual murder.

Saw this on JT and thought, "WTF?". I mean really, WTF?
Li was sentenced to 23 years after firing a handgun at a police officer during a burglary in 2005.
"We are really sorry. We just hope that he does not commit any more crimes," said Hideyuki Yamasaki of the prison.
:wall: Sorry? Yeah, that should comfort the people that live around the prison.
I'm sure our convict FG there just grabbed the first set of clothes conveniently left out to dry on someone's first floor balcony.

Chinese man serving 23 years for attempted murder

...of course if his intended victim was Chinese, he might have just been deported.

Not necessarily... if you don't go to the prison island concept. It can be put anywhere, doesn't matter much... Beside, for visit from relatives it's better to be near communication hubs. La prison de la sante is in Paris XIVth, and not much cause for troubles, most daring escapes are done with hijacked choppers these days... a least makes something interesting to watch in the neighbourghood... It's not like a chemical plant who might kill thousands if it blow up... I personnally find mental hospitals much more worrisome to put inside city walls... (like Saint Anne also in Paris XIVth)

Do they actually jail people in France anymore? I thought they just claim they were insane and in the case of Sagawa deport them.

All kidding aside, the prison located here is smack dab in the middle of a residental area. In Canada their is no way in hell that they would design a maximum security prison in a city without any defensive perimeter.

On TV this morning they were showing the Prison Guards and Cops climbing up the wall and peering over the edge of the wall looking very inquisitive on where the prisoner went. Usually there would be barbed wire fence along the edge to help keep the prisoners at bay.

why the hell did the let prisoners go out when the wall (cant even call that a barricade) was under construction?

common sense was not used here...

Most prison are more than 200% occupancy... The trouble is plenty of brownies and darkies have the french nationnality... So even if they are working on a law to strip them from citizenship if they talk badly on a cop, it's still not there yet... have to keep them here...

Shades of Tatsuya Ichihashi it seems (escaping from under the noses of the cops).
It seems that this is not Li's first escape. He also got away from the cops in around 2005 - in a stolen police car no less.
This Li guy was a criminal in the first place, so I wouldn't be surprised if his gangland connections keep him out of sight, and maybe even get him out of the country on the next fishing boat.

THIS...would be an even bigger cockslap to Japan if he turns up in China living a life of freedom Image

Chinese fugitive from Hiroshima prison captured
Japanese police recaptured a Chinese fugitive on Friday two days after he escaped from Hiroshima Prison, the police said.

Li Guolin, 40, escaped from the prison Wednesday by scaling a 5-meter prison fence that was undergoing repair work. The National Police Agency had put Li on a special wanted list.

Li had been in Hiroshima Prison for about three and a half years following his conviction for attempted murder and theft.

No. If he had done that, they would have told him to take a walk.

This all reminds me of my young years when I organized a Hash House Harriers run around the local jail, writing arrows on the wall in all directions (including up). Must have freaked out them guards tremendously to see a rowdy bunch of FG and FJ trying to break in. LOL

LOL! That's only if you're in Aum and have been a top ten fugitive for over ten years!

I did hear briefly on TV that when the dood made his break he stole some clothes from a local house and went for a walkabout. He claimed he turned himself in because he had no money, was hungry and wanted to go back to the prison, where he could eat.

Well, what ever rings your bell......
