I'm sure that will be fun...but like I said, if you have it on your driver's license, that should be acceptable for most places, depending on what you're doing.

I'm sure that will be fun...but like I said, if you have it on your driver's license, that should be acceptable for most places, depending on what you're doing.

Just checked my Drivers License and no katakana name. Maybe should get it added by the local boys in blue?

Yes, that's how I originally did mine (after literally 2 hours of the oyaji trying to input it and giving me every excuse in the book as to why it wouldn't fit, he asked one of the other office robots who put it in and printed it on the back in 30 sec) When I renewed the license, the DMV tried to add it on the front in brackets but it got hyphenated and continued onto the back of the card.

I like it when people look at my ID and see no katakana... they ket all mixed up with my name cause of the amount of spaces it has... I always get asked what my last name is...

If you do manage to get that done write a report. I don't like your chances. Knowing how accommodating and flexible any bureaucracy can be, I bet that you could only do that if you were changing your name and since you aren't changing your name, only the character set it is represented in, they will not do it.

Although Immigration is the source of the information that legal aliases will be able to be recorded on the Juminhyo they admit that they are not themselves responsible for the Juminhyo. Internal Affairs, who are responsible, are silent on this issue. It seems that our local government bodies will be sending us all provisional registrations to check over and amend prior to 9 July. We shall have to be vigilant then. Since my health insurance is registered in katakana (to the great relief of my dentist's receptionist when she calls me in) I should be OK.

Editted to further add that the linking of health insurance and pension payments with this new system will warm the blood this summer.

No crappy katakana is the FUCKING-GODDAMN-WAY-IT-SHOULD-BE.

By Japanese civil service law, all civil servants have to prove their romaji reading ability as a condition of their employment. Unless you are a 5th-Column Korean/Chinese with a kanji name [color="Silver"](or a bagbiter Islamist or Russian hooker)[/color] your name is best understood in romaji, sheesh.

Suruga bank will give out a visa cash card no problem (i should have updated the thread with all this...)

just open an account, choose to have a visa cash card, and make sure you have money in there when you spend. It is not a credit card obviously, but if you for some reason need a card with Visa/MasterCard on it, it works.

Thanks for that. Not a long term solution but will work in the mean time.
