Marriage of 5 years, whether in or out of Japan, but in practice PR applications are only entertained if the spouse is on a 3 year visa at the time of application. This may change to 5 year visa once they are issued.

Or 10 years residence.

Or sporting prowess. Use whichever comes first.

:inlove: cause you're awesome!

So basically 5 more years for me either way...unless I find a way to be more convincing.

side note: prowess aside, I actually am registered as Japanese when it comes to hockey. They forced me to pay out the ass(OK, NTT paid the bill but still was insultingly high) to petition and have my USA hockey membership transferred to the JIHF (Japan). They literally own my ass when it comes to hockey.

It's definitely not a sure thing. They reject people for things like too many job changes.

Doing my PR at the moment. After 12 years, 2 marriages (you'd think i would have learnt after the first one) and being always employed will be just a walk in the park.

Funny how the citizenship requirements (at least on paper) seem a bit more lax than the PR visa requirements.

PR is also flexible. I got PR at my first renewal of a spouse visa (two years and some). Since I was working for a government organization, the counterguy looked at my paperwork, noting that I was married to a local rice cooker and said I should make it out for PR. That required essentially filling in like forms with the only major difference being I had to add two references. It was approved in three weeks. I know of varying like stories of approval and also some horrible stories on rejections. It is obvious the requirements are only a meter stick, but who knows what application is really going to be accepted, or not. It's almost like "which way is the wind blowing today?"

I figured as much in this "case by case" country. Which would most of you prefer to have, given the choice? PR status or citizenship?

Now that they've changed the re-entry permit system, PR is just as good as citizenship, unless you just have a compelling urge to vote for some reason...

I really don't believe so Chok, but as always there's two schools of thought, one (rather vehemently) proclaims that if you are refused, this is a black mark and will never get accepted. The other which I subscribe to, feels that this is just a part of the process. On paper at least, your petition for PR is simply an application which demands supporting paperwork. If they do not feel you meet the requirements, your application will of course be declined, but, contrary to the believe of the Narita Hell-Hole boys, they must and will give you a reason. This is supposed to be case-by-case consideration and you're not to be hurt for trying.

On the other hand, if you're not married to a local flopper, it is much more difficult. You need to show stability within your community and obviously having your own local rice cooker in tow, is high on the list. A permanent job as an employee, or operating your own business is also up there. Obviously, having your own home would be a big plus.

The usual qualifications prevail, such as no criminal record and the like, are also counted. They will contact your listed references and if they are well thought of, and even better, hold high position in the community, or government, it is a big plus. Actually, PR here is not that much different than the screening in other countries when people are applying for the equivalency of a green card.

The best bet is to go in several months before you are to renew your current visa and discuss it with the guy at the window. Unless you get a real asshole, they're pretty good about helping you if you appear serious and don't try to BS your way through them.

Thanks for the advice Greji, all this would be at least a year off and assuming the lemur is in my tree on my leash (or the other way around?) but very good to know when and how to do it when the time comes.

STOP... THINK... THINK AGAIN... do you remember what one she was of the group of lemurs that you gathered up in the beginning or is she the last one still in the cage?

it's a lemur trap man... just wait a year or so...

Hahahaha, no worries there. I feel like I've been through more than half of honshu's lemur offerings and have yet to get wifed up with one of them. Lined up against every one I've caught and released, this lemur is still the keeper....but not rushing into anything.

I subscribe to this notion as well.

One thing I did for my PR application was to get as many years (in my case 12 years) worth of Government and Local Tax Receipts and Certificates and not just the last year. Also make sure you Health and Retirement payments are up to date as well and nothing is owing.

I would rather hand over too much information than not enough information just to keep them happy because they will looking into everything that has been done since you first landed here.

You really ought to try to wrest control of your brain away from your dick, at least occasionally, and especially while you're making any potentially serious life decisions. The ol' trouser snake is useful for a lot of things, but decision making isn't one of 'em!

I have similar experiences more than 15 years ago. Working as a scientist for government did wonders, and I got PR after my 3 year's spouse visa. It may also have helped that I stated that I needed PR in order to apply for a loan to buy a house. Well, it took me only 15 years after that to buy a house, so it was not a complete lie...

Hammer, after many years of contemplating that very topic, I have now come to the belief that I'll leave all further decisions to my johnson and any he can't make, shall be classified as not relevant....
