No animal-rights activist I. Still, I think what the Cove Watchers are doing is first-rate stuff. The more they publicize what's going on, the more the cognitive dissonance grows in the smug little heads of the nihonjin. Those chons and shinajins - so cruel! They'll eat anything with four legs/fins - except a table! Heh! We Japanese are sensitive four-season forest creatures enjoying our clean, safe, post-materialistic life, not getting hysterical over unfounded radiation rumors. What? Japanese fishermen and their yak backers are butchering and selling dolphins? Don't know anything about that. Must be some local thing. But we do think that those foreigners are being rude; maybe they should go home.

Exact response I got when J-people talked about that movie. Most wouldn't even watch it, calling it "anti-Japanese." The other excuse I hear is "Dolphins eat alot of fish!!" (in an attempt to justify the actions) Maybe the cannibals here use the same logic when they eat other Japanese.

Would be great if someone tested the mercury/radiation levels of dog/cat food here. I think that might actually get some decent reaction from the public.

I saw a TV show on pigs recently and was surprised to learn just how intelligent they are (much more so than a dog apparently). They can learn to do things very quickly. If you have them as a pet they will learn to open the fridge even if it has a latch on it (if the latch is not padlocked of course)! They also can strategize (if they have food buried nearby and another bigger pig is in the vicinity they will pretend to be busy elsewhere until the big pig is gone before digging it up).
So, my question is, when are people going to launch a 'save the pig' campaign (based on the fact that it's an intelligent animal)? :D
Just saying.

Cove guardian for Sea Shepherd arrested in Taiji, Japan
Erwin Vermeulen, a Dutch national and cove guardian for the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has been arrested in Taiji, Japan.

After a bloody week in Taiji's cove which witnessed several dolphin slaughters and captures, the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) is reporting that Japanese police have arrested and detained Erwin Vermeulen, a citizen of the Netherlands and one of several cove guardians representing SSCS in Taiji.

The arrest came after a Dolphin Resort Hotel employee in Taiji accused Vermeulen of shoving him. The Dutch cove guardian SSCS says, was merely attempting to take pictures of a dolphin transfer, not an uncommon sight in the tiny coastal town, where the resort regularly purchases dolphins directly from the Taiji Fishermen's Union.

[...]

According to Sea Shepherd's press release, there were no witnesses to the shoving incident and no questions asked by the Japanese police, Vermeulen was quietly handcuffed and hauled away. The guardian was transported to the Shingu police station in the Wakayama Prefecture on Thursday night, where he is still being held.

Sea Shepherd believes that the arrest of Vermeulen was staged and blamed rising tensions in Taiji between activists and fishermen.

[...]

The arrest of Vermeulen has also sparked claims from Sea Shepherd about a double standard in Japan. The organization refers to an earlier incident this year when cove guardian Rosie Kunneke, was assaulted by a Taiji fisherman. The man was questioned and released they say, yet Vermeulen "Has been denied a lawyer and visitation rights, even from the Dutch Embassy."

Fellow activists in Japan with Vermeulen are reporting that they have been denied access to their colleague and the Shingu police are refusing to answer any questions. Under Japanese law, Vermeulen, who funded his own trip to Taiji, can be held for 28 days before being allowed to speak with a lawyer.

Double standard?! Japan? Noooooo....

:nihonjin:

If the dolphins are so intelligent, why haven't they yet figured out to that place is like the dolphin version of Greji's annual pajama part bedroom bash?

If the Sea Shepard people are so intelligent, why aren't they using outsider Japanese to be "cove guardians?"

Since when does "shoving" someone result in an arrest? (doesn't say the hotel employee was injured and with no witnesses...even in Japan that sounds pretty extreme)

Full story...

And the "fishermen's" private police force just took care of the rest:

Cove guardians raided by police after brutal dolphin slaughter
Two days after arresting Dutch citizen Erwin Vermeulen, Wakayama police stormed the hotel where Sea Shepherd cove guardians and a Save Japan Dolphins monitor is staying. What is going on?

In a shocking twist following the arrest of Dutch national Erwin Vermeulen two days ago, Wakayama Prefecture police raided the Charmant Hotel near Kii-Katsuura last night, where several cove guardians for the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) and one cove monitor for Save Japan Dolphins (SJD) are currently staying. The raid occurred shortly after what monitors and guardians reported as the worst dolphin slaughter of the season.

According to Sea Shepherd, the 20 policemen "armed with a warrant ... seized computers, phones, hard drives, photos, cameras and anything they deemed suspicious." At first report, it was believed that three cove guardians and one SJD member –]More

Sea Shepherd. Bid to free Erwin

Yes, he is still being detained, even though he did nothing serious or nothing at all. The accusation by Japanese authorities that he physically pushed some J-person is consistently denied by this Dutchman. In the Dutch press it was recently reported that the unusually strict treatment of Erwin by Japan has a political reason: the refusal of Dutch authorities to do something about Sea Shepherd's anti-whaling activists sailing under a Dutch flag.

Love how Japan pulls this shit time after time with FG. How long til it deteriorates to NK style hostage exchanges? I hop the Dutch press picks up on all the "Foreigners in Japan have no rights" coverage and pumps it up.

Jailed dolphin activist ordered released but prosecutors disagree
The judge in the trial of Sea Shepherd activist Erwin Vermeulen arrested in Taiji, Japan, last December for an alleged pushing incident, has ordered him released. But prosecutors continue to push their case, demanding a hearing in a higher court.

Vermeulen has been held since his arrest on Dec. 16, after a Dolphin Resort Hotel employee in Taiji accused Vermeulen of pushing him during the transfer of a dolphin. The Dutch national, who was in Taiji to monitor the annual dolphin drives as a Cove Guardian for Sea Shepherd, was promptly arrested and remanded to prison.

Yesterday, during closing arguments, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) described the defense as "amazing in continuing to prove there is no case and no basis for this arrest and incarceration." The Judge agreed with the defense team, and subsequently ordered Erwin's release. The prosecution immediately appealed his decision to a higher court. As a result, Erwin Vermeulen remains in jail...

Erwin remained in custody while the prosecution appealed their loss...

However, the trial judge took the extraordinary step of sending the paperwork to the higher court on Friday night, ensuring that the appeal would be heard on Saturday.

The higher court agreed with the trial judge and denied the prosecution's appeal.

Mr Vermeulen was released from jail and walked outside in the sunshine for the first time in 63 days, Sea Shepherd said.

He will be back in court on Wednesday to hear the judge's verdict.

The prosecution has asked for a small fine of \100,000 ($1300), should Mr Vermeulen be found guilty.

No jail time was requested.

The defence alleged that arresting Mr Vermeulen and charging him with assault was politically motivated.

Mr Vermeulen will not be speaking to the media until after the verdict is handed down.
