Well, at this stage it looks likely they'll be recovering a body, no doubt.
To suggest that it's a case of suicide...Well, that's a bit much.

Any detail on where his car was specifically located?

My guess is it may be the case that he was retarded as you say. But soloing Fuji-san even in winter is not a major thing if you are experienced and have the right gear. It's got special weather conditions which make it harder from what I understand but it's only 3000m which is nothing compared to peaks elsewhere.

I think the shape of the mountain lulls people into a false sense of security, it is basically one long steady slope, but I guess the downside of that is there is no shelter from the wind other than the huts. Fatalities are not unheard of.

Japanese blogger Zarutoro has a short piece on the killing of the Nepalese man in Osaka. Some people are surprised that video footage showed he appeared to make no attempt to defend himself. News reports are pointing out that an informal rule in the Nepalese community is never to lay hands on a Japanese.

Zarutoro says this undoubtedly is a result of cases such as the Nepalese man found guilty of a murder which the evidence now suggests he didn't commit. The blogger is disgusted that abuses in the justice system may have contributed to such a fear of false prosecution, or lengthy detainment, that the victim might have thought it better not to resist.

Nikoneko I previously sent you a link to this guy's blog. If you read the rest of his stuff you will see that he is a very determined chap who will continue when others would have long ago given up. I think the most important factor, more than gear or maybe even experience, is to pick your day. I'm only telling you this because I worry that you may be tempted yourself. Me, I only need to see the photos of the glistening ice rink at a 30 degree angle to know that this is a mountain for admiring from a distance.

Oh yes wise words. The best thing about that blog is he knows when to call it in, which is very admirable, and sadly maybe not what this current guy did. Anyway for me, I am happy to 'solo' our little Rokko mountains at 900m for now. I would like to get to the JP Alps and Fuji-san too at some point but there's plenty of time and learning to do before that. Somehow I think the mountains will wait. ;)

It happens to the best of them. Sadly, many moutaineers don't seem to realize that summiting a peak is only the end of the first half of the journey. Successfully climing a moutain is a round-trip.

Surprisingly good coverage of this story. This is a positive step...now if the attackers get more than a slap on the wrist is still yet to be seen.

Don't know... I sort of like his style (the narrative style, not the 'going unprepared' style... But since I prepare for the smallest week end trip like if it was a 10 year re deployment of an entire army to the surface of the moon I'm not exactly the best exemple either)...

and

he survived

and

he still wanted to be a warning for the others anyway...

Got quite a few friend like that in highschool... doing something impulsively... surviving... coming back with the complete list of things NOT TO DO and stating as best moment from the trip "coming back alive". Motto was something like... "you don't know until you try" (but must admit the one who came up with the idea of barebacking a bresilian tranny in the bois de Boulogne might not be still around)

Judging from where the rescue team has headed, Johnson sees to have gone up Mount Fuji's standard 5th station route, which has perfectly OK cellphone reception. This sad situation may be a outcome of Japan's anti-cellphone policies for non-residents that makes it so damn expensive and inconvenient for gaijin without a resident's card to get a keitai.

Jan 25, 2012|PORTAGE, Mich. (AP) -- An online message says volunteer hikers have ascended Japan's Mount Fuji in search of a missing Michigan businessman.
The update was left Wednesday on the "Please pray for Matt Johnson" Facebook page*... by Johnson's sister says two volunteer climbers "made it up to the 5th station ... and camped overnight." It says they were planning to climb to the top and asks readers to "pray for a miracle."
The 33-year-old from the Kalamazoo suburb of Portage is a software engineer for Eaton Corp. He went to Japan on business. Mount Fuji is treacherous in wintertime. Japanese police say another person is missing and a third has died there this winter.

Yeah Taro', it doesn't address my question.

There a Four 5th stations. If the reports weren't being so vague about where his car was found, it would give a reasonable indication of the route that he would have taken.

What about this kid? Via the Fujinomiya Trail?

Yep. I figure that since Johnson was a tourist driving from Tokyo, he would drive to the closest and largest 5th Station that Mount Fuji has --Kawaguchi (Gogome)---where the bus road may at least be plowed a bit. Typically all Japanese news reports are criminally vague, but maybe these were intentionally vague to prevent "private" rescue attempts.

Johnson family: No hope for miracle
Friday, 27 Jan 2012, 2:39 AM EST
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD 8 TV) -
Late Thursday night the mother and father of the missing Portage man who disappeared on Mount Fuji, Matt Johnson, posted a message on the Facebook page Please Pray For Matt Johnson saying "There is no longer any hope of a miracle."
Matt Johnson, an engineer with Eaton Corporation, did not show up for work Jan. 16 while  on a business trip in Japan .
Johnson's car was found at the base of the mountain. Johnson disappeared on Mount Fuji Jan. 13.
In the message on Facebook, Johnson's mom and dad said that the two climbers made it to the top of Mount Fuji, but did not find any signs of him.
Johnson's parent's also said that "We really felt like finding Matt in/around the shelters high on the mountain was our last hope of finding him alive."
Johnson's family said that the focus will now shift to recovering his body...more...

That is really sad. I wonder if they made the whole trail and didn't see him what happened. He must have come off and fallen or maybe perhaps got lost. Are their side routes on fuji he could have got lost on? I'd always thought of it as some kind of tourist hike with not many places to get lost but I know very little about that mountain. Poor guy. :(

Edit: Or I suppose frozen under enough snow that they couldn't see him but hate to be morbid enough to check the storm reports...

Matt Johnson: Family of missing Portage man putting together a private search party
"This week, we are busy preparing a private search party that will attempt to recover Matt and bring him home. The team will assemble in Tokyo beginning next week. Please pray that logistics will easily fall into place, safety for the team as they travel to Tokyo (including my Dad and brother-in-law), and that the weather is ideal for searching."
