Anyone notice that radiation readings doubled last night?

Postby cstaylor » Tue Jan 24, 2012 10:47 am

Yokohama City hourly radiation readings

Still far lower that March. I wonder what the readings looked like farther north.

Yes that you should stop peeing into the garden off your veranda. :passout:

You are still producing fallout from your previous work on the Manhattan Project.

Well, it didn't snow that much in Kannai (which is where these readings were taken), and it snowed roughly the same amount a few days prior without much of a bump in numbers.

My guess is the wind direction changed.

TEPCO Notes Rise in Radioactive Leaks from Damaged Reactors

Tokyo, Jan. 23 (Jiji Press)--Tokyo Electric Power Co. <9501> on Monday reported an increase in radioactive materials leaking from damaged nuclear reactors at the Fukushima No. 1 power plant.
The total amount of radioactive cesium that leaked from the containment vessels of the No. 1 to No. 3 reactors reached 70 million becquerels per hour, up 12 million becquerels from the December level, the power firm said.
It seems that radioactive dusts were stirred up because plant workers went inside reactor buildings and removed rubble, TEPCO officials said.
The outcome was reported to the second meeting on medium- to long-term measures toward decommissioning of the damaged reactors held between the firm and the government on Monday.
Last month, the leaked amount was put at 10 million becquerels each for the No. 1 and No. 2 reactors and 40 million becquerels for the No. 3 reactor.

Let's slow down and do a little research before jumping to the conclusion that all noted thyroid abnormalities are due to the Fukushima nuke plant.

Thyroid nodules are quite common, and only a few are cancerous or pre-cancerous.

* One in 12 to 15 young women has a thyroid nodule.
* One in 40 young men has a thyroid nodule.
* More than 95% of all thyroid nodules are benign (non-cancerous growths).

And there's plenty more if you look around.

Damn you Yoko! Bringing a rationalizing sense to this specific topic....

Sorry 'bout that. It's just the way I am. If North Korea decides to drop a nuke in my neighborhood I'll want to examine it in detail before concluding that I'm dead.

It could be a real issue in the future, but it's still too early. Notable thyroid abnormalities in the Chernobyl kids only began to appear about 4 years after the accident. That doesn't mean it'll be the same here, but I do think it's really important not to jump the gun.

I would be interested to know in what geographic location their study was conducted. My wife, old-what's-her-name, had thyroid cancer many years ago. During the course of her treatment, both in US and in Japanese facilities, both sides advised that the Japanese, especially those living in costal communities, tended to have a much higher than normal incidence of thyroid problems. This was reportedly caused by the consumption of large amounts of seafood products with higher iodine content, such as seaweed and the like. I don't recall any of the figures, so I couldn't say just how much higher 30% is than the norm for such areas.

However, I would have to agree with Hammer that this is awfully fast to be able to lay on Tepco's doorstep (assuming that there's enough room on their doorstep for anything else!)

I agree...that there are so many unknowns. I find it interesting that both sides would suppose that increased iodine consumption in coastal Japan would be the cause of higher rates of thyroid cancer there...unless of course said iodine was radioactive and medical types knew that. Wasn't that the whole point of using potassium iodide supplements for the areas near the center of the nuclear accident - flooding the bodies of those at high risk of ingesting radioactive iodine (that would be absorbed by their thyroids) with a source of non-contaminated iodine so that their thyroids would be so full of the megadose of KI that they would not take up any radioiodine-contamination.

Resident defiant in Japan's exclusion zone
By Kyung Lah, CNN

January 27, 2012

Tomioka, Japan (CNN) -- In the shadow of the Fukushima nuclear plant, one man's quiet defiance echoes through the contaminated, empty streets of Tomioka, Japan.

Tomioka, 10 miles (16 kilometers) away from the disaster, is inside the 12.4 mile (20-kilometer) radius of the government-mandated evacuation zone. But that hasn't stopped Naoto Matsumura, 52, a life-long resident and fifth generation farmer, from refusing to heed the mandatory evacuation since the nuclear meltdown.

"I'm full of rage," says Matsumura. "That's why I'm still here. I refuse to leave and let go of this anger and grief. I weep when I see my hometown. The government and the people in Tokyo don't know what's really happening here."

His defiance began with a simple desire to feed the animals on his farm. The government evacuated 78,000 residents around the exploding plant without a plan to rescue pets and valuable livestock.
