University Students Wear Out Welcome at McDonalds

Postby Mulboyne » Sun Jan 29, 2012 12:52 am

Students of Kwansei Gakuin University in Nishinomiya, Hyogo prefecture, have been causing problems for a local McDonalds. They tend to occupy tables for hours at end, often doing revision ahead of exams. Some even appear to being food and drink in from outside. The manager contacted the university to ask them to remind students not to abuse local businesses. At first, the university posted a message that everyone was banned from McDonalds in the run-up to exams. The exasperated manager complained that the shop hadn't banned anyone and pointed out that other shops had similar problems. The University then removed the mention of McDonalds. One local coffee shop agrees that students can be a handful because they might order only one coffee but set up shop for hours. A nearby family restaurant has posted notices banning students from studying or holding meetings during peak business times. Since this spat, McDonalds PR department says that they have had no further problems.

Just have a time limit to how long a customer can occupy a table. Like they sometimes do at those "buffet" restaurants. :p The one I like to go to has a 90 minute limit, but we rarely stay for over 90 minutes, but when we do the waiters never say anything.

This has been going on for I don't know how long in this country. I'm only assuming they've never heard of loitering or related laws.

Exactly, just post signs with a time limit and all the sheeple should follow.

Countless times I've told ppl in Tokyo who have "set up shop" to get out so myself and whoever I was with could actual be paying customers to the establishment.

You sound like one cool dude... I really wanna hang with you.

Today, students. Tomorrow, let's menace some of those fuckin' homeless that keep occupying (geddit?) that stretch of grass near...

Ahh, maybe not.

Ever thought of upgrading the socio-economic level of the places you choose to eat/drink?

Why is it your fucking business how long they want to stay? If the shop allows it, you should stfu and go somewhere else.

People camp out over a cup of coffee, and if there is no sign posted saying "finish your beverage in a timely manner and get the fuck out", then, hey, that's part of the cost of doing business. Some folks will hang out for awhile. There is no such thing as a standardized "time by which you've overstayed the cost of your coffee at Cafe Veloce" (decent coffee jelly), so time to back away from playing coffee shop politician in this regard.
Shit, I've had the desire on many a broiling summer's day/freezing winter's day to get a (ice/hot) coffee and veg out in a cafe staying cool/warm and hiding from the world in a haze of cigarette smoke.

Now, if that customer doesn't buy anything, and actually starts to overtly eat their own food/drink their own drink (i.e., bought or prepared elsewhere), they should be shown the door, with the manager's shoe print on their ass.

If you see the coffee shop is getting crowded and people are coming in obviously looking for somewhere to take the weight off their feet it is only good manners to vacate your seat if you have been there a while.

This is all that's really needed...but yes, it sucks when you're out and about and everything is packed, mile long lines, etc...but that's just something you have to live with in Tokyo.

Speaking of which, I spent a couple hours at an overpriced Indian joint last night with some FG friends and kept ordering water after the meal. On about the 4th pitcher of water, the manager came over and asked us in an oh so polite Japanese way to leave. (many customers with reservations will soon be here so....) Place wasn't crowded or anything at that point but more and more people were coming in. No problem, we got up and left.
