You're one of the gaijins who takes Japan's surface easing off on the gaijin population for granted.

Wait til the day the authorities catch up with you - those parking tickets will bite you on your fat arse.

Yes. Parking tickets are petty. Don't bother with them. Traffic infractions like speeding I pay. All of my credit cards are in great standings. In fact, I owe nothing on them, and I have four non-secured credit cards. I pay everything in cash/yen. I only use my BofA MC to purchase iTunes music from the U.S. store. I never ever use my credit card for food, gas, and travel.

Very good point...when you consider that the immigration officials are all Japanese and think "all gaijin look alike."

This incident might be a little easier to understand if the poster, Flyjin, on the debito.org site is correct ...that the 45 year old American was residing in a gaijin house that was regularly visited by Immigration:

And, another poster provided a dated debito.org link about Immigration stopping and questioning residents of a gaijin house, Sakura House:

http://www.debito.org/?p=86

Of course, there are going to be some people who will remain outraged at this 'unwarranted harassment' of gaijin house residents, but when I first read about this incident, I was concerned whether Immigration might be knocking on my door b/c some co-worker decided he or she they wanted to get back at me somehow.

Well, I still think it's an outrageous imposition on honest people living in gaijin houses. I also think it shows a lazy-ass attitude on the part of the Immigration people.

So how is this different from randomly rounding up gaijin in Roppongi for "spot checks," for example? In addition to being sorta like shooting fish in a barrel (i.e. lazy-ass attitude), it's just plain wrong.

If this is indeed the answer, it's still fucked.

I tend to agree but I'd say it depends. If it's a place that has a history of repeatedly renting to people in the country illegally, I could understand why it might be targeted.

Sure, if it's a well-known den of iniquity, but I just can't believe it is. I would assume that the owner would be in serious trouble if he/she repeatedly rented to illegals.

If they want to stop illegal gaijin working here they should throw the people that employ them into prison, it would stop the problem in about 3 months.

Yes I'm sure all those Yakuza-run mizushobai and construction companies would comply.

No need for illegals!
The mizushobai, or the reputable ones anyway :D , are still able to get perfectly legitimate "entertainer" visas for thousands of females from the Philippines, Thailand, etc. About 6000 of them last year just from those 2 countries, IIRC.

Used to be double that 5 years ago, but Immigration is "cracking down" to the appropriate level of gaijin "entertainers", which just happens to be about 2 orders of magnitude higher than the number of gaijin nurses they're trying to train. So you can see where Immigration policy has its priorities. ;)

Funny how I never see these "entertainers" on TV or hear them on the radio or such...
I wonder what kind of "entertainment" they provide..
and where, and how much is it per hour?

Not that I disagree with your view but illegals in the US are a different problem. (though the J-media would have you believe otherwise) It's bad enough being a legal FG here sometimes....trying to live in Japan off the grid for long? Not too easy to do without help. Targeting that help can make a difference...but TIJ so how effective that would be is definitely up for debate.

Do you have any info about the US actually targeting employers of illegals? AFAIK it's mainly illegals themselves that are targeted, leaving employers free to hire new ones and have biz continue uninterrupted.

A while ago, four years maybe, the INS showed up at a bunch of meat packing plants with their white and green busses and gave a bunch of people a free chartered trip to Mexico.

So, once every four years (can you say election cycle) they have a single public rousting. I have seen videos of INS raiding the homes of illegals who worked in meat packing plants, where the next day a whole abattoir full of new illegals were busy working for Cargill or whatever corporation exploiting cheap labor. Their employer was left untouched by the authorities. Even in the case you cite (probably the Postville Raid), a few company fall-guys get charged, and close to 400 illegals get shipped out. Didn't see anything where the company itself took any heat - charges dismissed.

Nope...but it does make it risky. IMHO, they need to focus on the areas like when actual crimes are committed, medical care is given, eliminate the anchor baby system, and actually follow up on visa over stayers.

The anchor baby issue will require a constitutional amendment which won't be easy to get.

Amendment to say born to legal U.S. residents or citizens. The Mexicanzzzz may protest but if the problem is to be solved, it needs to happen.

I know, it's just funny that even Cheech Marin was born in LA, was a Cal State frat boy, and then went a draft dodging to Vancouver to hook up in with his Chinese Canadian partner.
